I've seen a mod about desert stone that added desert mineral ores but I don't remember the name right now, so you might want to take a look at it... Since desert stone now extends downwards more, why not give the deserts more layers of desert sand and sandstone? If more of the underground is useless, then why not make the surface... bigger or deeper? This would yield more desert sand/sandstone per m².

Oil certainly sounds good. But there's something else: Many mods add diffrent types of stone. And there's hardware coloring now. The desert could be composed of sandstone in diffrent colors. Thus, builders will get new nice materials for their houses at little extra cost. Perhaps the colors ought to be limited to 8 diffrent ones (although 256 would be possible) in order to allow for stairs and slabs and the like out of that new sandstone type.
A list of my mods can be found here.
