Could someone here who uses it explain to me if it has any advantages over let's say IRC? I've heard about it and I know that it's some sort of Internet messaging protocol and client but on Wikipedia cannot find much information on its features.

Hey, can we stop filling these kinds of threads with this garbage? Discord users don't go listing all of the reasons why IRC is outdated and unusable every time it's mentioned. Let people use whatever platform they want to use and let them live in peace. If you don't, you are part of the problem. Anyone that has been banned from the Minetest Discord server was handled as such due to non-compliance with the server rules. Whining about it everywhere else just shows your immaturity and how much you probably deserved it.

I remember my friend showing me the Discord client and it worked very slow and had ugly UI. I don't see why anybody would want to use this, if you want to share files you can just use regular e-mail.

This all was clarified in these forums (relating Samantha, a 18 years old character). My mod is PEGI 6 compliant. So don't insist. And stop seeing ghosts where there are none, paranoid.

but I also didn't join Discord long time ago - as I had also other issues.

I don't agree: to inform and take a stand is legit, to force is not. Hex may lack of touch, but he didn't force anyone and he actually spoke the truth without forcing anyone (I mean, neocities does its best to look like tinfoil and out of this world, but heh..)

Contrary to Discord, it respects users privacy, and contrary to IRC, it doesn't look like something belonging to the 90s (it has all modern features like emoji reactions, text formatting, file sharing etc). If you wanna give it a try, you're more than welcome :) You can also pick whatever client you want, I suggest you Element => https://element.io/
The room is #minetest-matrix:tchncs.de, but you can easily find it just by typing "Minetest" in the search bar. Also, because I don't want to lie to you, the major missing feature are the vocal rooms Discord has. I hope they'll implement eventually, they're very active when it comes to developing

Minetest Discord is NOT official. So one must be able to speak freely about it. It is not part of Minetest. When I speak ill of Minetest Discord, I am not speaking of Minetest, but of a freak created outside. The Minetest admins should not, should not, get involved.

I'm aware that people are going to make sure they use it, just because it's popular. It's the same case as Whatsapp, against Signal or Telegram.

But as Asterix I am incorruptible. My principles are above all else. Swimming against the tide sometimes, it's hard sometimes, but it strengthens your resistance.

Decent people should use sustainable alternatives.

I really do not understand why nowadays every each and then the wheel must be reinvented only not to look like something old.

Convenience is usually paid with your data. I wait for the moment when it will be too inconvenient to even use
the actually hip chat apps. What will be next ? Just leave everything to chat and play bots ? That would be even more
convenient than using a headset. Or some super retro, using the keyboard again app ?

But to answer the question, if you have no problem in giving your data away for free, continue using discord.

User experience does matter, and there's no reason why open source software can't have a good user experience as well. IRC has a lot of users, but it's not the only FOSS chat software out there
