Server and Connection Timed Out

So my friend and I are trying to build together, but we can't figure out how to make a server, but just for us?
-We live in different places
-We have different versions (5.1.1 and 5.3.0)
Is it still possible to play together?
Every time we get close to figuring it out it says Connection Timed Out.

It hard to help you when you only provide a few informations.
- did you try to join your server locally (on your machine) with another client
- did you forward the port on your router
- correct IP and port
- check your firewalls
- working internet connection

you need to port forward. check out the guys at http://192.168.1.1 . they can help you out
