Why is the setting "opaque water" and not "translucent / transparent water"?

Why is the setting "opaque water" and not "translucent / transparent water"?
Each of these seem like performance-feature tradeoff settings. Why is there one checkbox unchecked when I want all features, or one left if I need maximum performance? It's confusing.

Because the only thing consistent about Minetest is inconsistency
