I found out about minetest in April (?) 2012 and played 0.3.1 stable at the beginning. It took me some hours to figure out what the black thing in the stone was (it turned out it was coal) and how to use a furnace The wiki at minetest.com was very helpful at that time. This time also included ragequits because of DMs destroying everything.
I read about mods in the wiki, so I wanted to get the Mesecons mod, since I originally wanted to play arround with redstone in Minecraft. But since Minecraft is not free I looked for alternatives and found Minetest. However, I switched to the current 0.4 snapshot of Minetest of that time in order to get the Mesecons mod working (I used the daily/unstable PPA). It doesnt work (more preciesly: I couldnt dig the mesecons), so I looked at the Lua code a bit and fixed it.
I was quite disappointed (sorry Jeija), so I read through lua-api.txt and made my own electricity/logic mod (it was much faster than the mesecons mod of that time). I had a nice time playing arround with the API.
I told my friend about Minetest and we played a bit together on a private server.
After some weeks of not playing Minetest I came back, cloned the repo, compiled the latest dev version myself (that was something arround June 2012) and was really excited about the sounds. I have done some awesome castles in that time and played arround with mods.
In July 2012 I found the carts mod by xyz and it was a complete disaster. So I made my own carts mod in some hours and thought it would be a nice idea to release it in the forum. You can find it here: http://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?id=2451 (its my first post in the forum).
Well, thats the story how I found out about Minetest, how I played a at the beginning and became a modder.

My first version was 0.4.1, so I started playing during the current generation of Minetest. It wasn't until 0.4.3 that I started playing on servers, however.

I technically first played Minetest (I'm not sure what version) on the OpenPandora, but I couldn't figure out how to control it, so I don't think that counts. The first time I really played it was after my brother tried it; he downloaded it from the repo of the GNU/Linux distro he was using, and unfortunately it was and still is 0.3.1 even though the latest version at the time was 0.4.5. A bit later, I downloaded 0.4.5, and then after being confused about why mods I tried to install were failing, I eventually learned that the only place worth going to for mods was the mods forum and learned how to install mods properly. I joined the forum shortly after that to make a comment or ask a question on a mod's topic, I think.

I started playing minetest after school ended in 2011, alll my freinds were telling me to play minecraft, but since you have to pay for minecraft i tried to download it (I couldnt find any new downloads of it) but i found an old download of alpha and played that but then i found out my version was outdated. While searching for "Latest minecraft download" i a came across 0.3.1 minetest, and fell in love with it 100% Then i never went and never will go back to MC again.

I started playing minetest at the 0.3.2 because I found minetest in debian when I looked minecraft then I went on minetest.net and I saw that the latest version was 0.4.4 :J

BY ME (KOBAYASHI) FOR YOU
I'm knowing and playing Minetest since end of february this year. I was playing with a few costum mods, but i disliked that the stairs n slaps had no sound (that time), so i startet to look at code and added sound to them Next was adding sound to doors then.
So, my starting version was 0.4.4, my first released mod was Glowstone (also my first post here).
Since then im more modding than playing, trying to improve the game and support the project
PS: Oh, and im knowing this genre because of a german Minecraft Let's Player

I started at 0.4.4, and built some cool stuff, but it was getting hard to move my world files onto all the different computers I have, so I started mostly using servers a few weeks after the release of 0.4.5. I still use 0.4.5 for going on servers other then mine (because 0.4.6 doesn't show public servers), and until recently, I used it to test mods that I made. A few weeks ago I started using 0.4.6 to test mods when I found out that you need to configure them and stuff to get them to work. I first learned about minetest on the forums in another game, and I liked it so much that I stopped playing the other game and it was a few weeks before I went back on the forums for that game to announce that I was leaving. I'm not going to leave minetest any time soon, because even though there are not that many features yet and there are a lot of bugs, there are lots of updates and we haven't even reached version 1 yet.

I started playing around I think 0.4.3 or 0.4.1(07/2012)? It was just before creative inventory was added. That's why I made my old creative inventory mod.

Well, back when I started playing Minetest, it was a short Irrlicht example source file. It had a mesh spinning at the middle of the window. I thought it was boring and figured out how to generate and render an editable voxel world in it and then it got pretty fun. I think it was around October 2010.
