Some original names for underworld realms

by paramat » Post

"nether" from wikitionary:

"From Middle English nether, nethere, nithere, from Old English niþera (“lower, under, lowest”, adjective), from niþer, niþor (“below, beneath, down, downwards, lower, in an inferior position”, adv), from Proto-Germanic *niþer, *niþra (“down”), from Proto-Indo-European *ni-, *nei- (“in, down”); akin to Old Saxon adjective nithiri (“nether”), adverb nithar (“down”), Old High German adjective nidari, nidaro (“nether”), adverb nidar (“down”) (see German nieder), Old Dutch nither (see Dutch neder) Old Norse adjective neðri, neðarri (“nether”), adverb niðr (“down”); all from a Germanic word that is a comparative of a word akin to Sanskrit नि (ni, “down”) and Albanian nën (“under, in”) from *nënd, compound of në (“in”) + dhe (“earth”), lit. in, under the earth; akin to Old English in."

I also like "Nadir" (from wikitionary):

"From Medieval Latin nadir, from Arabic نَظِيرُ السَّمْت (naẓīru as-samt), composed of السَمْتُ (as-samt, “the zenith”) and نَظِير (naẓīr, “counterpart, corresponding to”)."

I mean just "Naziru" would be an awesome realm name.

why must it be "nether" like? and not a bit more realistic?

eg. in the norse mythology there where 2 places for the underworld
a realy cold one caled "Niflheim" http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niflheim
and a hot one caled Muspellsheim http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muspellsheim
there are a lot of other names for the Underworld in diffrent mythologies

eg. Avalon, Walhal (!=Wahlalla),Hades,etc.pp

but ur realy right the place should not caled like the minecraft one
(also imo we need another name of the obsidian too)

That sounds like a great idea. Have two "nethers", one bellow the other. I think an ice themed nether would be a great addition.

And then add a Cronus boss :)

Why not just call it Hell. All those suggestions are cool (I like "nidari" the most), but simplicity is success.

Nadir... Yes. I suggested that to someone a while ago. It sounds a lot better and cooler than nether and it is simple to incorporate. Nadirworld...
“Would it save you a lot of time if I just gave up and went mad now?”

“I'd far rather be happy than right any day.”

“What, are you, crazy?" "It's a possibility I haven't ruled out yet"

It's Kronos, which just so happens to be the original GREEK SPELLING.

Uh, no, the original GREEK spelling is Κρόνος.
And I suppose we'll call Jupiter Cronion. ;P

I thought it appropriate to search for Finnish underworld names:
"Manala, in Finnish mythology, the realm of the dead. The word is possibly derived from the compound maan-ala, “the space (or area) under the earth.” It is also called Tuonela, the realm of Tuoni, and Pohjola, derived from the word pohja, meaning “bottom” and also “north”."

I was reading your discussion, on names for the underworld, and i agree it should not be like the Minecraft, Nether, it should be called something entirely different, and it would be good if it was a multi-biome place, that would make it different to the Minecraft one.

maybe a three tiered underworld, and make it so you need to get certain achievements to get to the next level. probably a stupid idea but i thought i would suggest it.

By the way i do like the sound of Tartarus.
