I suggest adding support for sfinv. It's simpler, and less ugly than unified inventory. Plus it's included in MTG by default, and has a nicer API

Is that the default interface (sfinv)?

At the moment it uses unified inventory ... I like it more than the standard one ... okay, but thats another thing, IMHO.

I got it to let the mod work. You need to install the two mods and give you the "teacher" right.
https://github.com/zeuner/edutest-chatcommands
https://github.com/zeuner/edutest

I'm member in a german Facebook-Group where we are discussiong about the use of Minecraft/Minetest in education. This edutest is a commission that is payed by a german library association. They want to have a version that can be easily used by "normal" teacher and educationalists (not the geeks like us).
At the moment we are talking about the idea to start a crowfounding to accelerate the development of a MinetestEDU-Version or however it will be called. To have a server to download the version, to get help, find instructions how to use it (for teachers an pupils) and ready-to-use worlds with scenarios for learning und so on.

What do you think about such a thing?

May be we should start an international discussion-group about that!?

I would join the discussion. A teacher interface would help a lot! They are intimidated by chat commands in my school tho the kids do them every session.

I have developed my own vision of MinetestEDU based on Isidor Zeuner's work. It's been ported to sfinv. Please take a look at: https://github.com/apienk/minetest-edutest-ui and viewtopic.php?f=5&t=11452 (the original idea, soon to be upgraded to project home).

Really good. I'll need to have a look at it.

At the moment I'm starting at the Minetest Wiki to create a page for teachers with all of the needed informations to start with Minetest and use it with kids. https://wiki.minetest.net/MinetestEDU
Anyone is invited to add his own language and translate the informations.

Before adding any more detailed information it would be good to collect the basic ideas what informations are usefull for teachers and what subpages would be usefull.

I also want to collect informations about useful mods. I have some german text about some of the mods and I will show what my ideas are how to present them.

I'm new to Minetest and read a lot about it and i'm trying to sort all the information, mods, subgames and so on.

I would love to get my students (11-16 years old - Germany) involved with Minetest. I can think about porjects in picture-editing as creating new textures or skins. Maybe even a new node.

How can i help :)

Here's a mod worth checking out with some immediate applications to any educational game.

basic robots - viewtopic.php?f=9&t=15850

I am using these robots to quiz students for in-game rewards, such as cash and special items. I think the students will use them to code as well. (This is going to be day two of using the mod in class.)

Just thought I'd share it as it has been an immediate success in my classes.

You might want the mod basic-machines too, for the keyboard-button
that allows robots to be activated by players other than the owner.

BTW, how do the students activate the quiz-bot currently,
without such a button ?

at first, I threw a lever in between the 'cpu box' and the chest above it.
then I tried putting a block with a lever in between the cpu box and the chest with a lever on it and I found the robot didn't mind, so thats been how its worked. Image

I uploaded a first implementation supporting sfinv to the sfinv branch. With sfinv, I don't see how players can access all blocks when they have been granted the "creative" privilege, though. So I'm currently considering to remove the "Creative mode" button when the sfinv interface is active.

There's a bunch of home brew stuff I am using that I haven't really figured out how to release yet... mostly due to time. Running the game for bunches of students keeps me busy. major mods I recall - mesecons - moremesecons - basic_robots and basic_machines, uscurrency which is a modified version of currency, and a few tweaks as a sub game (like no weapons) - I've been cutting down the mods I use because I had so many loaded that things wouldn't run at all. I'll grab a list and post it soon.

When writing EDUtest, I had in mind making it useful for a wide range of education-related requirements. Most dependencies are optional. So I wonder if it's possible to support all the requirements in one codebase, possibly keeping us from implementing functionality twice.

Anyway, great to see the chatcommands being used in another project!

Hmmm ... okay, I do not code these mods, but as a user I prefer unified_inventory.

Can't it be possible to offer code for both inventory types?

Another possibility is to have a button that is part of the HUD (would be nice to see some informations like number of students, active settings, ... in the HUD) and then you are independent of the used inventory.

To see how to add an item to the HUD:
Kaeza has a small mod that adds a clock to the HUD.

But the list of students in the mods gui is almost as cool... when I am running the server almost all my users are in a classroom with me, so the number itself is less important for me.

Okay ... you are right ... I never used the Mod with many players.

But on the other hand, when you are wainting, the number of students will give you a hint, if someone is missing or if you can start.

What do you do with your students? Do you have some prepared maps for special purposes?

For starters I built a custom map with models of their schools and local landmarks. Then I included stores and ways to earn currency (us denominations) and I encourage them to build up the town. As the game goes on through the weeks we introduce different events like Halloween decorations , now Christmas, last yr they fought off a virus (through puzzles).

The famous WorldEdit modpack already proved it. They support various inventory implementations from one GUI mod.

I have a sfinv-capable feature branch in EDUtest. I will include it into master after some testing.

Maybe all those active people could join the minetest-edu irc Channel so we are able to talk about this Project. I would love to help
