I want to make a mod that allows for irregular areas, conforming to a building's outline. I feel this can be accomplished by creating a node that, when clicked, shows a formspec. This formspec will have options, such as which nodes around it to protect, which not to, how many nodes outside of the building should be protected, etcetera. This way, one project can be protected and named with one area.
I am wondering if this is a good idea, and if anybody has suggestions.

That's of course possible, but I'm unsure as to how well it will perform. You will have to store and check a lot more data whenever someone digs or places a block than those mods that stick to more regular shapes. It might hurt performance a lot for a very small gain.
A list of my mods can be found here.

You could just use multiple cuboid areas in current mods.

Have you seen buildings with a bunch of areas for one building? Anyways, maybe this should just automatically make necessary cuboids and depend on areas mod.
