Using Public Domain Wikipedia images

by Red_King_Cyclops » Tue Sep 03, 2019 22:31

I'm making a mod that uses images at the following links:
+ Image links

These images are found on Wikipedia and are licensed as "Public Domain." Am I allowed to use these images for my mod?
I'm working on a mod that is essentially Galacticraft for Minetest (with differences).

As long as you adhere to the license, you may use what ever you like.

Yes any image in the public domain should be okay to use, however the concept of "Public Domain" is a bit of s sketchy concept. I always try to find Pics that are CC0 or at least meet the requirements of most countries Public domain rules.

However you have to watch out as some countries have different time frames regarding when certain images become/turn public domain. I tend to avoid any image that is less than 100 Years old since death of artist, but even then some countries have some strange rules. Normally Wikipedia is pretty good at highlighting those.

Anything were the creator has released something explicitly to either CC0, Public Domain, you'll be okay as the creator themselves is never going to come after you. (NASA is a great source for Public Domain planet images etc - all US Gov departments release all images under US-Public Domain concept).

Short answer yep your fine, just document were you retrieved the image from in the readme file and whatever Public Domain licence it's under.

I'm wondering about re-licensing public domain stuff to CC0 (or other). I guess it is possible as far as it is actually public domain stuff in your country.

Know also that images which are public domain due to age or formalities might have trademarks visible, if the company is still around and the trademark still valid, trademarks could still be enforced regardless of the image's copyright.
