How to properly hide skybox underground?

by Linuxdirk » Post

Without a skybox the sky is turned black when being underground to avoid the bright day sky being visible through the "holes" between the node edges or when sky is visible because parts are not loaded.

When setting a skybox this mechanic seems to be disabled entirely and the sky stays fully bright all the time when being underground.

Are there already good solutions to prevent this except manually tracking where the player is and remove the skybox when applicable?

I don’t think so. The inherent reasoning seems to be that whenever default setting is overwritten, the modder is expected to handle all skybox-related features. Which sounds like a decent case for a(nother) boilerplate skybox API mod.

The proper way to do this is disable the skybox under a certain height.
For an example, see https://notabug.org/Genshin/skybox_extended

Well, this is what I want to avoid because you need to constantly check where the player is. Also underground not equal a certain height.

Imagine a giant crater that goes below -20 or so and then the skybox disappears. Or a cave system entirely above 0 where the skybox “leaks” through even if it should not be visible at all.

It also causes an abrupt change instead of fading out like it is without skybox.
