Looking for mods which make the world hazardous
I have been assembling a mod set to make the environment as dangerous as possible. So far I have:

Re: Looking for mods which make the world hazardous
The Basic Survival mod on the JT2 server makes temperature a key game mechanic, by integrating with my 3D Armor, Snowfall, Snowdrift, and Extra Foods mods. It uses a sophisticated algorithm that factors in the temperature of what you drink, what you wield, what you stand on, what you stand near, and the ambient temperature to compute a "temp felt".
If the temp felt becomes too high, then it will result in a heat stroke, whereas too low will lead to frostbite. Such risks can be exacerbated by other conditions as well, including immersion in water. Therefore, avoiding temperature extremes becomes an important strategy to the survival gameplay.
For this reason, wearing armor is oftentimes essential. Each material has different conduction and insulation properties. For example, steel armor has high conduction, so standing near a heat source like an active furnace will cause the armor itself to heat up, thereby amplifying the sensation of warmth. This could be an advantage or disadvantage depending on the ambient temperature.
Consuming certain foods or drinks, can likewise cool or warm the body sufficiently to avoid such negative effects. For example chocolate ice cream, can dramatically lower the "temp felt" for up to 30 seconds, which can prove advantageous when standing near a lava source while mining obsidian. Similarly if the ambient temperature is below freezing, and you forgot to bring suitable armor, then it might be wise to stock up on hot chocolate.
When in a pinch, wielding an item like a torch or an ice cube can similarly cool or warm the body. However, this method inhibits use of other tools, so it is really only advantageous for exploring, rather than building or mining.
