Rename or replace for a major mod update (breakages, name-change)?

by SylvesterKruin » Post

I've been thinking about how I might want to update my Subways mod to include more kinds of trains, and I'd also like to redo the textures/models to make them look better. The broadening of the types of trains I include would require a rename of the mod, and the texture/model updates would almost definitely break trains from older versions.

If I were to make these updates, which would be considered better practice: renaming the existing ContentDB entry I have for the Subways mod, or deprecating that existing entry and creating a new one with the new name? Here are the pros and cons of each as I see them (feel free to add/dectract/criticize them):

Renaming the existing ContentDB entry:
Pro:
  • Would take up less space than having two mods
Con:
  • Would make it so after updating the mod any old trains that the user might have would be broken and have to be replaced
Creating a new ContentDB entry:
Pro:
  • Would give users more time to "transition" between the two versions
Con:
  • Would mean that there would be two different mod listings until the old version was removed
I'm still rather new to the Minetest modding community. Is one of these preferred over the other, or does it not matter?
My favorite things to build: trains and realistic(ish) architecture
