building a game from scratch

by firefox » Post

(perpetually edited post)

i shouldn't have deleted previous failed works out of frustration...
one of them was almost completed and i could really have used that now.
anyway, after 3 years of ...well, i don't really know what i did all this time... i'm finally back on the right track.
the code was lost but i found some old notes on paper, so i could at least reconstruct the base ideas of my previous work.
using paramat's Minipeli game as foundation, i'm slowly beginning to put things into practice.

current progress:
- created minimal base requirements by using Minipeli
- learned about licensing with a helpful post from sofar
- updated the README.txt
- added textures for sun and moon, updated crack texture

in the beginning there was the void.
the Fox was floating within it and said "what is this?! there is nothing here!".
then he created the stone, that fills half of the world. it generated in various shapes, forming deep valleys and high mountains.
the Fox declared "this is the earth. and above, there is the sky.".
then he noticed the sun and the moon moving across the sky, creating day and night.
but he was not happy, because they looked like ugly squares.
the Fox clapped his hands and with a flashy *poof* the sun and moon became round and fancy looking.
"now, this is much better" he said.
"but the earth looks so dry and dusty... there should be water flowing on it" and he created water, which filled up the deepest valleys to form big oceans, small lakes and rivers.
then he went down to a nice river, and laid down near the shore to take a nap.

the lighter blue/cyan to the right is river water. all liquid source blocks are renewable.

That answer lol

Here are my suggestions for some nodes/blocks keep in mind this is stuff I would like to see but If It Doesn't fit your game you don't have to do it :D

(hedges) It uses the Cobblestone Wall model but instead of Cobblestone It has a Leaf Texture

(stalactites and stalagmites) this would improve caves and clifs to look More interesting they wold Look Something like this

Also maybe you could change the way the gui (inventory) looks To be something new
(Not a mod and Not the base Something completely New)

Maybe a couple new trees and plans (like a new small cactus plant in the desert like this that would be great for Decoration Reasons

Also I Would really love to have a chair block To sit on like The One x-decor has

Also on the previous topic I posted a comment but you probably didn't see it so here it is agan

Hey I found this topic a while Back and I really Love what he did with the Trees sadly he ever continued It Could you do something similar with your trees he Made the bottom block a bit thicker with a custom node model
i recommend checking out the forum page for inspiration thers lots of cool ideas
heres a picture from The forum post
Image
also look at this page viewtopic.php?f=50&t=10895&start=125 those caves and lians hanging from the clif my god so nice

thats it XD

nah... i don't like it :P

i have plans not only for flowers for all colours, but also different flowers for different biomes, like in TenPlus1's Ethereal mapgen.
toby109tt wrote:Also I Would really love to have a chair block To sit on like The One x-decor has
i will include x-decor =(^.^)=
toby109tt wrote:Also on the previous topic I posted a comment but you probably didn't see it so here it is agan
i did see it, but it's not what i want.
i will use the default block style but with custom made tree models ;)

the next morning, the Fox wandered around to discover his new world.
he climbed a mountain, crossed an ocean, wandered through a valley and swam in a river.
then he got bored. "all is of the same shade of grey..."
then he got a brilliant idea.
"ninja kittens, hand me the Paint Brush."
on the first rock, he painted a fancy moustache, on the next rock, he painted curly eyebrows.
but then he painted all the rocks with nice earthen colours and named them Rock Stone, Earth Stone, Red Stone and Yellow Stone.
he send out his ninja kittens to spread the new stones all over the world, then laid down to sleep again.

when the Fox woke up, he was in really bad mood.
his back hurt, because the stone he laid on was hard and uncomfortable.
now he got really angry. "NYAAAAA!!! =(>.<)= "
he fiercely grabbed the stones and crushed them into tiny pieces, creating cobble, gravel, dirt and sand.
"RAAAAAAAWR!!!" he threw it up in the air,
and as it rained down to the earth, the world's surface was covered with soft soil.
then went back to sleep.

the biome API supports mapgen v5, v7 and valleys. that's 3 worlds to choose from ;)
v7 is the standard mapgen with a mix of normal and interesting terrain.
valleys makes realistic terrain with rivers. (and river water)
v5 makes crazy unrealistic terrain :P

caves are as usual (depending on the mapgen) but i will change the depth levels of ores.
it's still to early, but here's my plan:
metals (for tools and armor) - iron, copper, gold, silver, mithril
iron+copper=bronze, gold+silver=orichalcum
gems (for magic) - coal, jade, mese, diamond

not yet...

and i read that the default default mod is too big and causes long load times because everything depends on it,
and that it would be better to have each thing in it's own mod.
so i think i might re-arrange some things first.
(if i continue like this, my default mod would be even bigger than the default default mod :P )

i degraded the default mod to just include default sounds, the player model, wieldhand, forspecs and sun and moon textures.
biomes and all their blocks and liquids have been moved to the "ground" mod. =(^.^)=
no other changes besides that...

next is adding dirt with grass and polish biome definitions to get sandy oceans and beaches.
also duplicating the "underground" biome to include the other stone types as well. (rock stone will still be the most common, since there is no ice underground. earth stone will be 2nd and desert stone the rarest, but not finite like in default ;) )

while the Fox was sleeping, wind and waves picked up the crumbled rock pieces and sorted sand from gravel.
shores and riverbeds now had a different soil than the higher lands.
eventually, grass sprouted from the soil and slowly covered every place where the sunlight reaches.
the ninja kittens picked up the paint brush and coloured the grass according to the colour of the stones it was growing on.
so they created green, dry, mossy and snowy grass.
they also carried the sand into the desert and the snow to the glaciers.
when the Fox woke up after his long sleep, he found his world bright and colourful.

status info:

currently i'm re-writing the biome definitions to include an underground, ocean, beach, land and mountain version for each of the 9 biomes.
mars, venus, jupiter and mercury are already done.
having 9 underground biomes instead of 4 (for the 4 stones) is important for biome based ore distribution later ;)

i also changed lava and river water back to being un-renewable, since i learned that the bucket mod allows a forced renew when filling buckets.
i will also add other methods to generate river water and lava when i expand the functions of liquid interactions.

and once again i forgot to take the missing screenshot of the desert :P
