I don't really like it.

The gradients look too harsh, the logo seems meh, and the fonts are still really thin.

What happened to this concept? http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2012/ ... 5b61yl.png

Hopefully buried. I don’t like it at all. Looks like from the eighties :)

But still: The menu stuff needs a complete re-write in my opinion …

Looks like a Super-Mario game.
The idea is good but it does not fit to Minetest.

I don't think that this 'new' look has changed anything but BG. So I don't care if it is to be/already was added.
That one from the 90-ties (Mario hit Japan only in 1986, duh) better suits my taste.

But that oldie doesn't really change one more important thing than a BG: the meaning of "*CPD" is not clear for a newcomer.
FM has tooltips AND icons. MT thinks that its users are red-eyed people of Linux...

So...
Menus-shmenus...

Bring back the localization Sapier had devoid us of, fix utf8 (FM has done it long ago. In fact the only thing was needed was to check every place where a conversion happens) and use some MC-like font (there are many of those with CC-BY-SA licence).
If you want I can make one myself with ENG and CYR symbols and release it under WTFPL so MT would be able to add more characters for French, Deutsch, Japanese katakana & hiragana, etc.
Then and only then one should change the look of the main menu.

Note, that's only my opinion (ppl tend to thing I'm clamoring smth).

I agree with 4aiman. You can not fix the menu with some textures. Actually I like the transparent grey the current menu has.
You don't need a full redesign for a better menu. Changing the strange green selection color would do a difference. The headers are much better then the current one, they should be included no mater if the menu gets merged or not.

Yes, localization is a real issue for everyone outside the United States and should not be broken or removed without reason (and should be re-implemented as soon as possible with high priority).

In addition to that: As far as I know localization of mods is not possible at the moment. There are several different attempts to implement localization of mods on a mod basis. It should be done by the core code (i.e. parsing all strings with gettext or having a built-in function with short a global name like _() that can be used by mod authors).

Also UTF-8 usage should be fixed and should be fully functional. Maybe remove all other charsets than UTF-8 since it’s more or less the worldwide minimum default charset.

Font’s aren’t a big issue for me, because it’s very easy to use another font via config file options. The only thing regarding fonts that should be fixed is scaling of UI elements to match the selected font face and font size.

I agree, I'm not really a fan of the current main menu scheme. Even jp's proposal looks more appealing

I am definitely not a fan of jp's proposal, but we do need something more pixel-y to that effect.

It looks like it could have been good for Voxus with a little tweaking.

It perfectly fits MT.

New menu design for Minetest

Not bad Ben, this really has potential for defining the " USER "

I'm all in when it comes to new user-face interfaces and implementing new features such as this
