Different soils for forests

Since I play Minetest the forests are confusing me. I never saw such a steril forest with lush green grass.

In a pine tree forest I would expect something more like this

http://cdn.paper4pc.com/images/pine-for ... per-11.jpg

Twigs, dry needles and maybe some moss and ferns

In a deciduous forest I would expect more leaves

http://www.wald-laeufer.de/wander.toure ... ubwald.htm

I will try to modify the biomes and create some new nodes for this. Does someone has some suggestions for good textures?

PS: I know the woodsoil mod from plantlife, but that is not what I mean

Made an experiment. I add a new node with a new texture (not the best, I'm not an artist) and modified mapgen to place this node in deciduous forests instead of grass

looks like this

Good news for you:

In this mod there is one called woodsoils, I think it depends on plant lib.

I love the effect.

Ahhh, my bad. I didn't see the P.S. part.

But you're right, I like the effect too. But that is not my intention

I would like a different top texture in coniferous forest that has dried needles, maybe we will.
I would also prefer a darker, richer soil colour, the light brown is ugly.

Darker richer soil makes sense, but my take on the lightness would be debris and needles/leaves lying on the soil surface.
A new lush grass free, forest floor node would welcome :)

The surface in forests normally is covered with leaves, twigs and needles. You don't see much soil. And my color is not brown, it's more like a grayish dirty green

Add soil for coniferous forest. I decided to make it more grayish.

And a side by side comparison with deciduous forest surface

the textures are just to demonstrate how different surfaces may look, they are not carved in stone

I really like the different soil types :) Ethereal biomes work in a similar way :))

I really like both..., I think you did a fine job.

I especially like the coniferous floor-bed... that looks great. gives a sense of realism.

The deciduous could use only, maybe a few scattered/brown leaves mixed in and it would be perfect

Yep... I'm liking this a lot burli

I have a point regarding pine trees to add for devs... most pine trees in temperate areas are very tall, with no vegetation (actually dead and broken branches 3/4 up)... and then vegetation (pine needles the top 1/4).
Just sayin'..., this might be a really good detail to take into consideration as well for future MT releases ; )

and burli... maybe some ground-pine brush? varying in sizes? maybe sml, med, and lg?

I like the concept a lot.
The deciduous forest soil is great, but I think the pine needles soil is too light and too grey.

The pine needles is just the normal grass texture with a different color. So it can be changed easily.

You can have all the pine needles from my yard... I hate them >: (

I like this too, it makes it more interesting to explore different biomes.

I want to add a new node for Jungle, but I think this will newer come to MTG because the Dev team fights against each new node. But it really should because it breaks the monotony a little bit

That's a really great idea, making more visual variations with the various forests in biomes helps a lot in keeping exploration interesting.

I actually want new surface nodes for coniferous forest, but i'm not too good with textures, so if anyone has textures for dead brown needles on a coniferous forest floor do submit them.
For jungle lush green grass seems unsuitable, i expect it would be more like bare compacted dirt.
So yes we are not opposing this, please submit your textures.

Normally you don't find bare soil in forests. They are covered with leaves, needles, twigs, trunks, moss and maybe some grass. But bare soil you normally wont find in a forest

Yes, we need a littered surface for rainforest.

UjEdwin, thanks i'll test the brown one.

They look good! (bottom one looks best imo)

Bottom one is potentially good.
