Re: Rename mapgens
A possible compromise on the mapgen names would be, instead of calling them v5, v6, and v7, to call them Style/Type 5, 6, or 7. This may very well remove the impression that mg5 and mg6 are legacy because you version word is removed from the name. I admit that it is still non-descriptive, but maybe it solves part of the problem.

Re: Rename mapgens
Does really no one have better name ideas? Come on, let's brainstorm, OK? :-)
Re: Rename mapgens
it's hard to summarize it into a single word, but i will try:Wuzzy wrote:Does really no one have better name ideas? Come on, let's brainstorm, OK? :-)
v6 has either smooth hills or pillar-like plateaus. and since it also has less biomes than the others, i would name it Simple World or something like that.
v7 creates mostly realistic terrain with only a few interesting odd shapes. also the biomes can be very large, so i would name it Wide Lands or something like that.
v5 is my favourite since it generates very interesting terrain.
i think it needs an appropriately interesting name, like Giga Gaia :P

I like:
v5: Bloblands
v6: Simple or Hills
v7: Widelands
singlenode: Air (It describes it and is totally correct, paramat!)
fractal, flat, and valleys need to be capitalized.

Hey paramat:
Singlenode is described as "singlenode: Empty world " according to the Minetest Wiki. (See https://wiki.minetest.net/Mapgen)

Re: Rename mapgens
Since when do names always have to be descriptive? Perhaps we should standardize the names for player skins too. Names like "Bob" and "Sam" don't accurately reflect their appearance.Wuzzy wrote:NO. These names would not be descriptive at all and would only add to the confusion.
We'd be wise to improve the nomenclature of mobs too. Oerrki and Paniki are out. Let's call them what they really are: Wizard and Bat.
The fact of the matter is, with the exception of Flat and Empty, most mapgens are not specialized for only one purpose and the full range of their functionality cannot be conveyed in a single word.
The main selling point of Mapgen v7, at the time of its release, was that it supported biomes natively. So to be accurate, we should call Mapgen v7 "Biomes". I realize that nowadays all mapgens support configurable biomes. But then again, most mapgens also support hills, nevertheless you are proposing that one specific mapgen be called "Hills" :P
I see nothing wrong with crediting individuals for major contributions to the engine, regardless of whether they left the project. This has nothing to do with branding. Nobody is going to market the map generators independent of Minetest.Sergey wrote:Bad thought. What if author abandon the project? What then? Maybe you want rename MT to "Perttu Ahola Game"?
Suffice it to say, even computational algorithms (which is what the map generators are) are quite often named after the people that invented them. In pathfinding applications, for example, programmers will often choose between Dijkstra and Bellman-Ford and Floyd–Warshall.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pathfinding
So again, I suggest that the mapgens be named after the principal authors. Subsequent versions of the same mapgen could be distinguished with "Mk II" and the like, or some other appropriate designation.

Re: Rename mapgens
No! Those names are very nice! Mobs shouldn't have names like 'Bat' or 'Zombie'... They are very original! And a legacy from the past versions! BTW what is a paniki (in minetest)sorcerykid wrote: We'd be wise to improve the nomenclature of mobs too. Oerrki and Paniki are out.

Re: Rename mapgens
The most apt names I would derive just from reading the wiki https://wiki.minetest.net/Map_generator#Description :
v5 - "Strange"
v6 - "Simple"
v7 - "Immense"
v5 - "Strange"
v6 - "Simple"
v7 - "Immense"

Re: Rename mapgens
That sounds like the best suggestion to me. There is just no way to really cover the differences between the mapgens in just one word. In the description, you might also extend the mapgen's name from v(ersion)6 to v(ariant)6. The texts for the mouseover could be taken from the wiki. People might still wonder what happened to variant1-4.Sergey wrote: Mapgens must have short names. If you want more description — tooltips must be added with more description when you hover it with mouse.
