"True" Flat world

I was thinking, maybe it would be logical to have a true flat world, without things such as trees. Tell me what you think. I might try to make it, and if I do, I'll ask for it to be put into the latest of minetest, 5.0.0.
If you don't like something I say, you are too easily offended...

Just use MGFlat and set the flags nodecorations, nodungeons, nocaves,

you could edit

mgflat_spflags = nolakes, nohills
mg_flags = nocaves, nodungeons, nodecorations

in your map_meta.txt when creating a world with mgflat ...

or try some old mods such as
flatgen or superflat ...

or search the forum and use this script from the "I need a completely flat green map" thread. Keep in mind though that some mods may not respect the nodecorations flags setting.
And yet a similar thread: "Grassland-Map" that mentions the grassland mod

This sounds great! Only problem is, I want this to be included in the game, not for it to become a mod.

It is already in the game... it is all in advanced settings.
All this was done long ago

You can set it to use these settings all the time or, other methods to set it world-specific.

What if players don't want to mess around in settings to make a flat world, when a true flat world could be generated in 2 clicks?

Yes sure, it would be convenient to have a button for everything. After all this is an engine and provides a generic solution to get most out of it.
Simplest method: grab that flatgen mod and run it at least once in your world. Disable it whenever you want. The changes are persistent.

I am trying to do stuff to get contributor status. Does MT need anything?

You can write a mod that sets the above mapgen settings for any newly generated world where the mod is enabled.
The mod would also set the mapgen to 'flat': 'mg_name = flat'.
'mgflat_spflags = nolakes,nohills' is not needed because that is the default already.

The advantage is you are using the core mapgen which is much faster then a lua mapgen and also doesn't cause server lag during generation.

So all this is already possible as explained.

Also, I really need something to do over the winter break. I can try to help with anything that needs help.

Also, the main reason I am trying to help is that when I get a job, contributing to the development of an open source game would probably help my resume :P
