“Secret” feature: Main menu music

There's a “secret” (Ok, not really) feature in Minetest that allows you to play main menu music in Minetest:

Just add “main_menu.ogg” into this directory:
  • GNU/Linux: $HOME/.minetest/sounds, where “$HOME” refers to your home directory.
  • macOS: same as for GNU/Linux.
  • Windows: into the “sounds” directory found in the main program folder in which you have installed Minetest. It is the directory containing the directories like bin (which in turn contains minetest.exe), builtin, client, doc, fonts, games, locale, mods, textures, etc.
You can add up to 11 different music files. Minetest will pick a track at random. The following file names are possible:
  • main_menu.ogg
  • main_menu.1.ogg
  • main_menu.2.ogg
  • main_menu.3.ogg
  • main_menu.4.ogg
  • main_menu.5.ogg
  • main_menu.6.ogg
  • main_menu.7.ogg
  • main_menu.8.ogg
  • main_menu.9.ogg
  • main_menu.0.ogg
Sadly, the main menu music stops in the loading screen. :-(

This guide is also available in the Minetest Wiki: https://wiki.minetest.net/Main_menu_music

There must be some way to allow the music to play in the background during gameplay? (possibly at a reduced level)

In-game music is implemented by, well, the game. There's also MPD: https://content.minetest.net/packages/orwell/mpd/

And some games already package music themselves.

But this thread is about main menu music …

Too bad they aren't game specific.
Would be cool to have custom themed music for each game in the game menu :)

I'm not sure if that would be a good idea, tbh. Every time you select a new game, music playback would reset …
And what to play while in settings/online/other tab?

It's amazing what you did in result of adding this single unknown sound name to the documentation.

It's almost as if documenting a feature that nobody knew about is the same as adding a brand new feature!

lol
have been using this feature since at least version 0.4.10 in 2014
normally the Sintel song
and an old installation of mine of 0.4.15 from 2017 has 5 ogg files

and I remember discussing with HybridDog and RBA about possible content ... and there also was the testsounds folder

Here's a nice track for the main menu:

Underwater Theme by CleytonKauffman.

But you need to convert it to Ogg first.
