Nether without Portals
Nether without Portals
This is something came to me the other week and held back knowing there a mod that supports this but after looking this more closely I've decided to talk about it.
The "Nether" (or whatever anyone wants to call it) is more so the idea of hell being in the center of the earth. The further you did down, the closer you are to getting the the molten core. Since Minetest has no 'center of the earth', the "Nether can be set to the lowest point of the map perhaps starting at -25000.

Thats quite similar to an idea I am thinking of for some time. But instead of a Nether equivalent there is a void. The more you dig down the more caves there are, the less stone, at some point there are only some flying islands left in the dark. The only light comes from strange creatures and plants. A place as beautiful as dangerous. And when you fall, you fall all the way.

another way: at -30500 stone melting from high temp, and you fall into huge lava ocean.

Wow awesome image, you made that?
Minetest's strength is it's vertical height, allowing a stack of flat realms (similar to many ancient cosmologies).
I find it more intersting and intuitive to have a hell realm physically located below, to give the option of either digging to it or acquiring special materials to make portals.
In comparison Minecraft plus Aether mod attempts stacked realms but is forced to do it through portals and loading new worlds.
Casimir good idea about caves expanding, that is easily done by altering my fissure mod.

Im all for stacked realms, this is a great idea as a simple start to see how well it actually works. Maybe something like a fissure cave network system with huge lava lake beds around the -25000 to -30000 mark. Great test area and far enough away for others that are not interested in stacked realms as it wont generate unless you go down there.
Running @1.19 MHz, 128 bytes of RAM and interchangeable 4kb ROM carts!
I like this!Casimir wrote:Thats quite similar to an idea I am thinking of for some time. But instead of a Nether equivalent there is a void. Btw, why do we call it Nether? Why not just hell?

Cause "Nether" is more or less a borrowed name from Minecraft and concept name, so it can be used more universally. "Hell" on the other-hand may not fit for some parents who still believe its still a swear word to kids.webdesigner97 wrote:Btw, why do we call it Nether? Why not just hell?
Personally, I think Minetest's "Nether" should have its own name rather than nether. Something like "The Core" or something relating to the center of the earth. After all users here often see Minecraft being about Magic and Minetest about Science. If people truly believe that, then they would omit all fictitious names from the game.

7:42 PM - Bauglio: I think if you go to staples you could steal firmware from a fax machine that would run better than win10 does on any platform
7:42 PM - Bauglio: so fudge the stable build

Well, If we're taking ideas for names, then I suggest naming it the Inferno. From one standpoint it references myth like many scientific names do while instead being completely descriptive of the place itself. After all the realm would really be just a fiery inferno.
As for the "Aether" idea, I'd call it the Skylands. Might as well wrap in some of the best mods in the boards (with permission) while we're talking about features which are already done by mods.

I agree with Nachtholm, "Inferno" is great name for "Bottomland".
My suggestions for the name of "Topland" are: "Vault", "Paradise", "Rapture", "Eternity", "Arcadia", "Dreamland";
(...) for "Bottomland": "Purgatory", "Abyss", "Oblivion", "Underworld", "Perdition";

Spoiler
Or just Topland and Bottomland
Nope
