I think what minetest is still missing is a library of well-known subgames, with a long playability.

But calm down. Minecraft has no voice-transmission feature either.

It does through modding
Guidebook Lib, for in-game docs | Poly Decor, some cool blocks | Vision Lib, an all-purpose library.

Well, I have never seen anyone use such a mod, users usually use something like Skype, TeamSpeak, or an analog phone line. You can do the same in Minetest and it would also be possible to write such a mod (client-side?)

Map generation is a bit strange (caves, ...), textures should be improved, more items and better player movement, those are my sugestions.

Re: What's Minetest still missing over Minecraft?
Map generation depends only on the mapgen and items depend solely on the game you're using (except for a few hard-coded items).
I agree 100% with textures though, although they are dependent on the game as well (mostly) the default ones in Minetest game are awful, I think they should be swapped for REFI Textures which I usually use.

I found that but I don't think people still uses Mumble.
Sykkuno, OTV used the mod. They are proximity based. Not a skype/teamspeak.

Re: What's Minetest still missing over Minecraft?
This is like asking what are bananas still missing over oranges, at this point.
But hey!
If you like paying money for things that have free alternatives, MC. If you want a freely available and far more robust choice, MT.
If you want a simple child like game, on par with candycrush, get MC.
If you want a true voxel sandbox capable of reproducing the entirety of MC as a single use case, as well as, being a visual tool for educators, scientists, and clinicians, as well as being an interface to a dynamic live system, as well as being a capable 3d data engine, as well as being a whole host of other use case scenarios, get the only one of the two that can. Minetest.
MC for simple, singular, highly child like and friendly gameplayability that can be played on a console.
MT for EVERYTHING else!

well then, MT is just for quirky puzzle games that get you to craft pick axes in ingenious ways .ShadMOrdre wrote: ↑Mon Jan 18, 2021 08:56MC for simple, singular, highly child like and friendly gameplayability that can be played on a console.
Shad
MC has evolved from the bog standard childlike game you envision . it has well over 10,000 mods and has evolved gameplay such as RLcraft .
no good trying to big up Minetest when we do not have one decent showcase game as a standard .

the only ones that even qualify are nodecore and a literal MC clone. All the others are derivatives of MTG.cuthbertdoublebarrel wrote: ↑Mon Jan 18, 2021 11:03no good trying to big up Minetest when we do not have one decent showcase game as a standard .

not really a fan of the clone and nodecore is not my cup of tea .PolySaken wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 02:05the only ones that even qualify are nodecore and a literal MC clone. i stopped playing the derivatives as they did not show case enough of the fan mods . MTG has the potential to produce a far more faster paced and immersive gaming experience , there is loads of content both past and present that is not featured in those derivatives .

Re: What's Minetest still missing over Minecraft?
1. Shaders, ambient sound, everything that gives an atmospere sense
2. Other worlds. Hell/heaven/other planet/everything
3. Mobs improve. Now it's not so good and harmony like in Minecraft
It's only my IMHO

Custom client-side shaders configurable by users, like texture packs. So in addition to ./textures, ./worlds, ./mods, etc. there should be ./shaders where users can place GLSL shaders like the provided ones.
Absolutely. And absolutely go over the top with it!
Concept discussed here: viewtopic.php?t=20333 (read whole thread).

Re: What's Minetest still missing over Minecraft?
This could all be done with custom shaders. Since custom shaders are not implemented right now, we cannot have such things :(
The name is a bit misleading, but "world-aligned" textures can span over 16x16 nodes using the scale paraemter in tile definition.
https://github.com/minetest/minetest/bl ... 7127-L7137
Unfortunately this is a feature that will likely never be in the engine.
https://github.com/minetest/minetest/issues/36
https://github.com/minetest/minetest/issues/323
https://github.com/minetest/minetest/issues/2746
https://github.com/minetest/minetest/issues/2887
https://github.com/minetest/minetest/issues/7848
All of this issues describe a feature that would allow that functionality. In my "Minor Redefinitions" mod I had that feature working, but very inefficient and complex, but without engine change, but I eventually removed it because it was a bad implementation and because of this:
https://github.com/minetest/minetest/issues/4050
https://github.com/minetest/minetest/issues/5214
https://github.com/minetest/minetest/pull/5653
(And yes, nothing from any of those issues, nor the pull request, was implemented since creation.)
This is somewhat possible by registering another water node for the individual biomes. But yes, that would be great. Same with different sky tint, different fog color, etc.

Re: What's Minetest still missing over Minecraft?
Should also be possible using paramtype2 = color without registering multiple nodes.

Re: What's Minetest still missing over Minecraft?
Well, if #9193 gets implemented (it's got support), then random texture variants could be done something like
Code: Select all
on_construct = function(pos)
minetest.set_node(pos, {name=minetest.get_node(pos).name, param2=minetest.random(0, 255)})
end

There are two little things which MT is missing over MC:
MT: MC: A similar problem with activated fluid waves:

Re: What's Minetest still missing over Minecraft?
i dont see why the liquid level paramtype shouldnt work for nodeboxes. waterlogging sounds like an easy addition.

Re: What's Minetest still missing over Minecraft?
Lighting is not great, even with all the mods lighting options themselves are still not great, textures and models are not great, old mods seem to be often broken by changes Minetest developers make and thus need to be fixed by someone that is not them or the original mod developer.
I have never played Minecraft but I doubt I would enjoy it as much as an open source game that I can do anything I like with.
Obviously if it had a funded development team a budget could be put aside for art and asset, sound too, but I think once money becomes involved like that people will want more from it, people will expect it to pay their entire monthly wage indefinitely and the game would probably fork into a paid version. Anyone who invested such capital would probably want a return on their investment and if not - how long are they going to pay a team of even just 6 people 2,000 EUR a month. Which still, is not the greatest wage.
It's a bit of fun, I think it's really remarkable for what it is and what the community has cobbled together.

I guess, that might be as of people have to pay, and paying people might have for reasonable behavior as otherwise loos the investment.Cooking wrote:There are so much nice people, no bullying, no hate ... no griever ...

Since Microsoft's TOS allow worldwide lifetime banning of players basing on a single moderator being pissed it's no surprise that everyone is super nice.Festus1965 wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 02:20I guess, that might be as of people have to pay, and paying people might have for reasonable behavior as otherwise loos the investment.

But one thing I really miss is how polished Minecraft is compared to Minetest.
