Player designed as admin isn't an admin

by Rupicapra » Sun Dec 08, 2019 22:47

I set up a Raspberry pi 3b+ as a minetest server with a basic configuration. However, while
Code: Select all
name = [i]playername[/i]
when logging in with said name I don't have any administrator rights. What's more is when i run the
Code: Select all
/admin
command i get the message
the servers admin is .

What am i missing?

are you sure that ! minetest.conf is read ?
.. (force to load it with ""./minetest/bin/minetestserver --config /pathto/minetest.conf )
and
Code: Select all
name = playername
I hope inside the minetext.conf is no
Code: Select all
"[i]italic code[/i]"
Server: still up, see some gamer - but there is a new 1st important thread "climate change" for me.

Found the problem! I forgot my router doesn't support hairpinning, so the given address would be considered invalid.

What the heck does hairpinning have to do with do with admin priv assignment?

Like Festus1965 said, don't use italics in your conf file. Its not meant to be stylized.

You won't be given all admin rights on connect. Once you connect as admin to /grantme all to get all privs.

The error is clearly the player name itself.
Code: Select all
    name = [i]playername[/i]

The previous posters are right that this name is a bad idea. But they are wrong that the problem is related to “italics”. While it's true that Minetest does not support BBCode or any formatting for player names, that's not the true reason. The real answer is actually much more simple than that:

This name is invalid because player names are limited in their characters. Only a-z, A-Z, 0-9, the dash and the underscore are allowed (proof: src/player.h).
This name includes the characters “[”, “]” and “/”, which are forbidden. Therefore it causes breakage.

Solution: Only use a-z, A-Z, 0-9, dash or underscore in the player name.

I think we were referring to the syntaxing of the italics formatting BBCode as the error, not the actual italicized text, but if he wants a very verbose and technical explanation, I think you nailed it :)

I get the impression the OP wasn't literally putting BBCode into the config file, but was just attempting to emphasize the value of the setting for this post. At least I hope that was the intention.
