A compass with cobblestone generators

Trying to reproduce this fountain with four cobblestone generators, I noticed that in Minetest the cobblestone generates just in south and west direction, i.e. this fountain is a sort of compass!

Is this the intended behaviour?

There are way more things which serve as a compass. For example, take any cubical node which has all faces the same. If the texture on the front is rotated the same way as the texture on the top, you are facing northwards. Or place a slab on floor and hit it once by a screwdriver. It will be attached on the southern side.

It's been a bug for a veeeery long time, and there are multiple issues for fixing it.
