This was solved on IRC, their mistake was to use the remote_port setting. The correct setting for running a server on a certain port is port.

My mistake? What kind of nub places a remote_port setting in the conf before the actual server port? I mean what the heck is remote_port anyway?

Way to make someone feel like shit because your product is setup differently...
