[macOS] Resolution on MacBooks

by Byggare » Post

Hello, I have installed Minetest through Homebrew but the text in the application is very fuzzy on a MacBook because of the retina display. A trick which has worked with Java apps is adding the NSHighResolutionCapable setting to the app's Info.plist file, but the only thing it has improved is the titlebar.

Are there any Minetest builds suitable for use with MacBook displays?

Or is the only option to use MultiCraft to access Minetest servers? Its graphics do look much better as well as having readable text, but it instead has problems such as not being able to punch Travelnet boxes (it acts the same a right click).

Upcoming 5.5.0-dev builds from Homebrew should have this fixed as well, as we are currently switching to a custom Irrlicht build.
Look, I programmed a bug for you. >> Mod Search Engine << - Mods by Krock - DuckDuckGo mod search bang: !mtmod <keyword here>

Sorry for not replying sooner, I have been ill. After looking through threads I did come across and try that version of Minetest but it has the same problem. But I am still on Mojave (macOS 10.14.6) so I am sure my issue is different to whatever the problem was with Big Sur.

Everything is the correct size even with the Homebrew version, it is just the clarity of text which is a problem. Although the Minetest text in chat etc. is readable when sat up against the monitor, if sat back at a normal distance it gets too fuzzy for me to read. The in-game text on signs in just difficult to read even up close.

I could not attach an image to the forum so I used an upload site to attach a full resolution excerpt from a screenshot with Minetest and Multicraft side-by-side. The effect might not be the same on a standard resolution display, but it should show the difference.

If you look at the streetlamp or the edges of the signs they also show what I mean about the graphics also not being as clear, though they do not effect usability.

But those reasons are why I did not think it was a problem with the normal version of the game but instead needs a specific build. As I assume the issue is not normal rendering but that the game needs to be specifically rendered for the HiDPI displays?

This comment contains a 5.5.0-dev build you can test: https://github.com/minetest/minetest/is ... -800414636

You are correct that MultiCraft supports HiDPI properly (it renders at native resolution), however Minetest's rendering should not be so bad that text becomes unreadable.
Would be interesting to hear if the 5.5.0-dev build performs better than the 5.4.0 in your screenshot.

Unfortunately that build will not work on Mojave. It shows the 'incompatible version' crossed circle over the icon and states it requires macOS 10.15 or later when trying to open it.

Hm right, I built that on a Catalina machine.
If you feel like compiling from source you can get a build yourself from these instructions: https://github.com/minetest/minetest/is ... -803110867
