FPS problem!

by Mohrajabi05 » Post

Hi. I use minetest in xubuntu. My hardware is:
Cpu: Pentium 2
Ram: 2GB
Gpu: amd 1GB
My FPS in the game is 10-18 but Minetest uses only 70% of the CPU. I don't know what is the problem. Pleasr help me.

how much of the GPU is used ?
That might be the bottleneck then ... guess 100%
reduce some settings first page mtc ... and check if you get more fps

Where is the mtc?

Where is the mtc?
What is the mtc, mtc is Minetest Client
I mean the option settings there with
not
* smooth lighting
* particles
* 3d clouds
* but simple leaves
and so on ... = settings to reduce the work of the GPU also

added:
when the CPU doesn't go over 70% but fps is low, mean mostly that the GPU can't take any more load or data (if CPU load OR VideoRam) so that CPU can't work faster as the destination can't take more data that CPU might be able to send/give ...

same might be with CPU, as the available RAM is not enough to let it work faster.

So check this 4 measures: CPU / GPU load and both RAM usages.

Videoram is not the only "hot thing", but if the cpu is at "only" 70% then it is probably your gpu as Festus already mentioned.
But the first thing you should do is turn of all shaders, then test again and if you still have low fps, play in window mode.
The settings Festus mentioned are not that really heavy that they let fps drop in a significant way in my experience.
Also you shouldn't use texture packs that use higher resolutins then 16x16.
And do not use unlimeted viewing range, change the range in game with + to increase it and - to decrease it and find the best solution that fits for you.

18 FPS on ancient hardware is okay. What do you expect from a 20 years old CPU and so little RAM that it was called “outdated” even in 2008?

Are you really running a Pentium 2 !?

If your CPU does not get 100% usage your GPU is the bottleneck as others stated, what resolution are you playing on ?

Try playing at 1024x768 or even lower than that
