The forums go slow again

by runs » Post

Sometimes the loading stops. And an error page.

Please celeron, solve it. You can hire a site with a VPS. Or ask for money to the community to buy a next gen PC only for a server, 2000 € max. People are very stingy but it must be assumed that the Open Sourve requires a minimum amount of money to operate.

Thanz.

From what I can recall the forums are already running on a VPS. Shelling out large amounts of cash for a dedicated server (that I assume will be self hosted as well?) would be a naive idea if the cause of the slowdowns haven't precisely been narrowed down. phpBB, as bloated and clunky as it is, is certainly not very resource intensive, and throwing more hardware at the issue won't help if the cause is more along the lines of automated scripts (search engine crawlers along with some more malicious bots) saturating the available bandwidth.

as long you don't know what hardware is used ... a bit early to think about so much money

first analyse the bottlenecks that really slow it down.

Depending on my time here ... it is not always same slow, that indicates something, that is not fixed and stay same like HDD, Ram, CPU ... or something else is running there also ...

and I am not sure how often this was discussed yet ... did something change ?

celeron has the server in his own home. Minetest Forums had in nov20 1200 users at the same time. This implies a lot of people connected at the same time. The scalation is important.

So I propose to move the forums to a professional hosting out private houses. If you pay, you can demand to the service or amply the contract to more resources.

But well, that's just my opinion. I don't have much idea about servers. I only know that the forums sometimes go wrong.

The forums never were fast.

Last year I did a test and I guess it’s the exact same issue since then.

The only reason the forum had 1200 people in November 2020 is that there were lots of bots spamming the forums at that point until celeron55 banned their IP addresses or somesuch. There was never even close to that many actual users, registered or not.

In my morning about 6:15 ICT
I couldn't reach forum well - from 6 pages just one came ... and the others bad gateway

similar to know, just 45 ? people in
In total there are 74 users online :: 5 registered, 2 hidden and 67 guests (based on users active over the past 5 minutes)
but now very good, fast connection: so that seam not to depend on the visitors inside ?

The forums get marginally slower for me during European afternoon/evening, but I assume that's normal from extra load.

today morning login 7:45 ICT, 1:45 MEZ near normal,
I log in between 07:00 ICT until 20:30 ICT several times, mean 01:00 - 14:30 MEZ
too long time-span to think about a peak time
even in this time it is lowest amount of gamer in mt server, guess also in forum.

I think site is under an attack... Even servers have lag.
i notice this 'lag'... 'delay' in packets.... my server never suffers such lag.

i suggest looking into the newly created servers

As the
* minetest.net loading like normal
* website (forum.minetest.net) is under 51.159.52.190 (nixa.8dromeda.net) ? Microsoft Azure, Zürich, Schweiz (is slow loading)
but
* servers.minetest.net under 185.107.80.107 (NFOrce Entertainment B.V.) Netherlands (getting fast es normal)
and all servers are even under different positions
= there is no clear that only new servers might better, this result or explanation is sure NOT right !

My server is near 6 years under this location, and still very easy and fast to reach, so I have absolute no idea how you are getting your conclusions.
So far, as at forum are also no complaints about slow or not reachable servers there is only proof of lag on forum.

But a forum about minetest on a server from Microsoft Azure is interesting to see

Where did you pull out the fact that the forums are hosted on Azure? It's hosted on Scaleway in France.

The forums are hosted by celeron55, meanwhile the server list is hosted by sfan5 on a completely different server and minetest.net is hosted on GitHub Pages so that better be fast.

Only celeron55 would be able to exactly say why the forums are going slow again, but a couple days ago it was taken completely offline by a bot spamming requests to test SQL injection vulnerabilities. It might be related to that.

Just do

Code: Select all

ping forum.minetest.net
I get there:

Code: Select all

ping forum.minetest.net
PING forum.minetest.net (51.159.52.190) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from nixa.8dromeda.net (51.159.52.190): icmp_seq=1 ttl=50 time=220 ms
64 bytes from nixa.8dromeda.net (51.159.52.190): icmp_seq=2 ttl=50 time=220 ms
64 bytes from nixa.8dromeda.net (51.159.52.190): icmp_seq=3 ttl=50 time=220 ms
also 'mtr forum.minetest.net' leads to nixa.8dromeda.net.

and when I use a site like iplocation.com
I get now : Paris ; Organization Scaleway - I swear, yesterday got another
check via iplocation.net : France, ONLIME S.A.S., Scaleway

but anyway, still very slow,
the login page comes fast, but back to login (get forum structure) again slow, even into subforums.

But do you know the real problem:
Non of you two was clear stating if you at your location also have a slower forum or not.

Without this clear statement, I couldn't check out, if it might be just a problem on the way to Asia, My provider which also have some problems last month.

And also I learned last a science result, that only 20% of people say their own opinion, thoughts, meaning - and 80% follow the majority. Here that could be, that people write something are often hold down by some powerful programmers actors around minetest, and so also stop normal people to tell just simpel truth or legal own meaning.

* what url did you ping at ? 45.138.172.111 (45.138.172.111)
* my server is shown with 199 ms ping, that is near the best I can have, up to 220 would be no problem as the distance from list-server via ping to here IS long. the other lag ms I don't remember, as the ping is useless for any gamer, not playing from that same server-list IP.

btw : still slow, maybe a tiny bit better

from my Laptop to the Server (Germany)

it has always been a constant.. never changes... But in recent days it has massive spikes... some 1881ms... It causes the other players to Time-Out, so therefore its an external problem, not server - if it was server i would see in the debug, but i only see ''connection warning packet'' for a while then players Time-Out.

i think someone trying to Hurt MineTest - Probably some jealous MineCraft players.. or MineTest Server Owners trying to damage other servers to make them players join their epic 'lag free' server... Dirty Tactics.

That is fairly normal.. 44 is abit high... 28 - 33 is normal.... 120??? tiny but iv had 1881ms spikes.

Its making server 'max_lag' hit 68 seconds at times (this when players timeout)
