Invalid UTF-8 string work bypassed in debug

I am running Minetest in FreeBSD, and receive "Invalid UTF-8 string in several situations, including in the second line in debug (F5).

I bypassed this error by editing gameui.cpp, removing the grade sign, and recompiling.

I know that is not the best solution, but it was I could do now.

I accept suggestions for best solutions.

Which charset is used in Minetest? Is not UTF-8.

What is the locale setting of your system? Check the locale command.

Minetest may have problems if the system's locale is not set to UTF-8 (just a guess though).
