Hah ha! I pretty much forgot about this mod. I have no idea if it even still works with current Minetest.

Why did the github 404? The standard is to leave github code up forever after abandoning.

Heaps of people delete GitHub accounts for various reasons. They might delete it out of protest (like after the Microsoft acquisition) after moving their repositories elsewhere, or they might want to remove old stuff they don't like any more and find a bit embarrassing or something. Other times, it might have been that GitHub banned someone for a violation of terms of service or community guidelines - they posted pirated/piracy-enabling software or adult content; or they disrespected too many people in PR/Issue conversations; or something else.

i forked the mod, fixed deprecated warning messages and added /clearbones chat command to remove ALL existing waypoints for the player using it: https://github.com/sangeet79/showbones
