[Mod] World-warping supervirus [contamination]

by Piezo_ » Post

There are those among us who have grown tired of this world.
They see society as a disease, and humanity as pests.
They don't care for money, fame, or compassion.
Only one thing drives them: the desire to destroy.
There exists a pathogen, created by one of these wrathful sociopaths.
This pathogen is said to be capable of bringing about the end of all we know and love.
Its recipe has, for years, been locked away in the depths of a top-secret facility deep below the earth...
Until now.
Image
For those insane enough, the pathogen can be synthesized with the following recipe:

(Steel Block) (Brown Mushroom) (Steel Block)
(Brown Mushroom) (Mese Crystal) (Brown Mushroom)
(Steel Block) (Brown Mushroom) (Steel Block)

Once placed, it will begin to spread through the world, turning everything in its path to a decayed, hardened, toxic, greyish-turquoise shadow of its former self.

However, despite the apocalyptic threat of the pathogen, there are reasons one might want to flirt with calamity.

Deep within the caverns of contaminated wastelands, a mineral harder and stronger than any other known to man can be harvested, and used to make tools unrivaled in power.
This mineral is often referred to as black diamond.

Will you risk the destruction of your world in pursuit of it?

Disclaimer: I am not responsible for unintended horrific damage to your world. By downloading this mod, you are putting your own worlds at risk. This mod is designed to destroy worlds, and it is very effective at this. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Note: If you want to change the difficulty to something other than the four default settings, be warned. I have had very unpleasant(laggy) experiences with higher chance values.

If anyone was wondering, I don't plan on adding mobs.

So we must devise our own containment strategies, like perilously isolating the affected land within glass.

"Do not grief. Contaminant inside!"

Or posting signs that say "go no further, if the server loads any chunks ahead the contamination will spread!" :D

(a contaminated sign with that message would be a screenshot)

You could add craftable biohazard signs.

I think, the spreading could probably be implemented in a simpler way.

Have you thought of making some of the contaminated nodes falling? Or make some of the leaves decay (without drop),
he/him; Codeberg; GitHub; ContentDB; public personal TODO list; "DS" is preferred (but often too short)

This is about as simple as I can make it.

The less extra ABMs, the better.
Also, to optimize things, a lot of these nodes have minimal group-data, so leaves would not properly recognize that they were on a "tree".
Although the thought of having trees lose all of their leaves for a true wasteland asthetic is tempting, for some reason, I just don't like the idea, and it also makes navigation less of a challenge.

Update
  • Seriously optimized everything
  • Other mods can now register contaminated blocks
  • This mod now depends (non-optional) on minetest-systemd. See main post for link

FWIW It doesn't spread in Minetest v5 unless you remove line 51 (the neighbors={"group:can_contaminate"} line)

I can't see why though. Perhaps Minetest 5 broke something.

5.0.0 is in beta. It might be because of some engine bug...
