[0.4.10] Textureable sun and moon.
To use textures for sun and moon put sun.png and moon.png in your texture pack folder.
If you want them to be aviable for all the texture packs (including default), you can put them in /textures/pack/base/
If you want textures to be tinted, tonemaps have to be provided (512x1 px) named sun_tonemap.png and moon_tonemap.png
Sample tonemaps added as attachments.
Enjoy :)

Thanks for this, along with the custon skybox i now have all i need to complete my space mods.
I assume we could use a transparent texture to disable the sun or moon?

I have added three of your lines to the wiki
Now I have to find out how my moon station can circle a gas giant

For that i suppose setting the size of sun/moon is needed. ATM it has fixed size.twoelk wrote:I have added three of your lines to the wiki

And heres some video with the feature:

Re: [0.4.10] Textureable sun and moon.
sorry to bump, but is there a way to make this feature customizable in games? I want to change the sun and moon feature in my game, but not touch anything else.

Great stuff!
What location should I use to change the default images for a specific game?

This doesn't seem to be possible, currently, only texture packs may change it.afflatus wrote:Great stuff!

Re: [0.4.10] Textureable sun and moon.
Want to be on a moon circling Saturn?
Just put the file called moon.png into the textures/base/pack folder of your minetest version and enjoy Saturn travelling across your sky. This will change the default moon to an image of Saturn.
Sadly, as of version 0.4.10, the moon image seems to be displayed at a fixed size within Minetest. So until this may change in the future the orb of Saturn appears to be a little smaller than the default moon due to space needed to include the rings.
See the included info.txt for more information.

Very nice idea! Reminds me of a film where Saturn (or another planet with rings) appeared prominently at the end. Now the night is a lot nicer.twoelk wrote: Want to be on a moon circling Saturn?

Ahh, Saturn, Saturn... By far the most revered and worshiped planet in the solar system... Many corporations use symbols that relate to it... Said to have once been our primary star in a purple epoch of great antiquity... It is also known as Kronus, and thus is known as Father Time... The true name of Rome is Saturnia... The cube is the shape that represents it the best, thus it is quite at home in Minecraft, and thus in Minetest...

Re: [0.4.10] Textureable sun and moon.
Its really nice to be able to use textures for sun and moon now. Good work! Would be awesome if they were resizeable too tho.
Probably 'the quite earth', great movie. ^^Sokomine wrote:Reminds me of a film where Saturn (or another planet with rings) appeared prominently at the end.
Re: [0.4.10] Textureable sun and moon.
There is a reason why Saturn is used in corporate logos far more often than the other planets, and it is not just due to the fact that it is beautiful. Saturn is associated not only with silence, but also with restrictions, rules, corporations, and even judgement (which is why judges wear black robes.)Moonsand wrote:Its really nice to be able to use textures for sun and moon now. What about Jupiter, Uranus, and Neptune as moon textures as well? I especially prefer Uranus, as that poor planet gets very little attention.
Again, great work RealBadAngel. Time and time again, you prove to be one of the finest developers of Minetest.

Oh dear god you've not seen the infinite bitching from the other devs he gets.Inocudom wrote:Again, great work RealBadAngel. Time and time again, you prove to be one of the finest developers of Minetest.
tl;dr he makes something new breaks something unrelated, his commit gets reverted so it never happened.

haha and the bitching from a guy known as Jordach. Just thinking of the recent "conversations" about the looks of lava.Jordach wrote:...

but to be honest I think he "fixes" more than he breaks. Most people trying to work on the "look and feel" of Minetest get a good beating now and then, especially from some core devs who consider other things more important. I am not saying they are always wrong but I think he does quite often get accused of more than he is responsible for. What I do appreciate about RBA though is that he seems to be more aware of things outside of the Minetest-core code than others, such as that Minetest is using only a fraction of what could be possible with Irrlicht.
To keep praise in proportion I do believe there are other contributions worthy of more praise than this -
- but I must admit I really enjoy seeing Saturn or other stuff I experimented with traverse the Minetest sky. I do hope of course that this feature gets more options.
Possible future configuration could include (my wishlist ;-P)
- Size of object in the sky
- Keeping the descriptive original file name
- setting of a rising time
- More than one object (satellites and natural satellites)
- setting offset from default path for each satelite (parallel paths)
- making the orbit time of each satellite independant from the star background (making eclipses possible)
- making individual orbit paths independant from the default star background direction (east to west)

LOL! Oh I see the logs. Like a gaggle of Old Ladies.Jordach wrote:Oh dear god you've not seen the infinite bitching from the other devs he gets.
I gotta stand in RBA's corner. Some pretty exciting stuff he's working on. Actually you all are doing great work. Tis a shame a good portion of you dev's are so damn head strong though :)

That lava and water at first DID NOT use a dynamically generated cloud for bumpmappingm so it looked horrible.twoelk wrote:haha and the bitching from a guy known as Jordach. Just thinking of the recent "conversations" about the looks of lava.Jordach wrote:...

Oh yes. It looks very nice. Wish we could really travel that well and come that close to the outer planets (except with probes).twoelk wrote: but I must admit I really enjoy seeing Saturn or other stuff I experimented with traverse the Minetest sky.

Re: [0.4.10] Textureable sun and moon.
Hello there!
Sorry for necroposting, but I don't really want to create a new thread.
The question is: is there a way to change the moon/sun image at run-time?
I don't really care if there's only one moon/sun image for everyone or I should change those manually for every player online.
Does the set_sky do it's job?
