Vote for games to be bundled with Minetest

by celeron55 » Post

Here you can vote for games to be included in the main Minetest distribution. You should only vote for games that are validly mentioned in the "Declare your game to be ready to be bundled with Minetest" topic.

You should also say why the game(s) should be included, because that way it is possible to see which games fulfill different purposes.

You shouldn't vote for games that you don't personally play a lot.

I suggest to add some description into the main menu for the games, just like texture packs have their info.txt. [edit]BlockMen already mentioned that in IRC.[/edit]

Also I would like nodetest to be in the release. It has it's own stile different from minecraft and minetest_game. Also it takes other approaches in game mechanics (more focus on survival, no itemdrop) while still being compatible with most mods for minetest_game (except those that use diamonds, obsidian, vessels and so on).

Sokomine wrote:RealTest and Ethereal may also count. As well as that forrest one. No idea weather their developers are intrested in releasing them.

However, it does not always require a new mapgen. In order to enjoy Minetest, one needs the right collection of mods (people have diffrent needs there). How may we release those? Just downloading/forking the repros sounds a bit odd. Adding a huge package of up-to-date-mods that are automaticly updated would be best. Most mods are pretty tiny after all.

1. Minetest_NeXt

This game is the spiritual successor to the original minetest_game. Gameplay does not differ by a huge margin and as such I would recommend it to be packaged by default. I see it as just an unfrozen minetest_game.

I haven't played Nodetest or Carbone, so I can't say much for them.

Alternatively I would love to see innovative games such as Wastelands or Ethereal packaged with it. Both of them are not on that Declare game page, but are in active development and are quite nice.

EDIT: @celeron55: Wow, thanks for pasting that stuff here =)

7:42 PM - Bauglio: I think if you go to staples you could steal firmware from a fax machine that would run better than win10 does on any platform
7:42 PM - Bauglio: so fudge the stable build
7:43 PM - Bauglio: get the staple build

Minetest _NeXt.

Still, I think Calinou's Carbone Game should be in with the rest. (Provided he doesn't mind..)

Carbone does have potential, but its physics are a little difficult to get used to. Also, the doors in it don't have sounds.

Minetest_Next because it tries to be stable and familiar to MT_game/MC.

Maybe Nodetopia, i experienced some instabilities and the default games should be stable consistent.

I think it is awesome. and the doors problem is an easy* fix.

Tested Carbone and it is a great game, but it did big changes in the last weeks, so i wouldn't ship it at the moment, but in the future when the core components are set and stable.

All the subgames I would vote for are neither finished nor available for vote.

If I could, I would vote for:
  • Realtest, because it is very detailed. However, it is difficult to learn and the existing documentation is very incomplete and it is hard to find the important pieces.
  • Lord of the Test, because it focuses on adventure, you don’t have to mine all the time and you can explore the landscape a lot.
  • Eden, because of the great vegetation. However, this subgame is really large in size.
  • Exactly one minetest_game improvement subgame. But I didn’t play all so far, I would only suggest the best one of course. I report back when I have done so. Minetest does not need to bundle 1000 of minetest_game clones, I think. ;-)

Available for vote:
Carbone
Minetest Next

Maybe not available:
Lord of the Test
Big Freaking Dig
Nam ex spatio, omnes res venire possunt.
Why let the ground limit you when you can reach for the sky?
Back to college now, yay for sophomore year schedules. :P

I vote for Dreambuilder because it includes by default a lot of mods that I need.

I think that dreambuilder is way to heavy. I think we should stick with simple and light weight things that don't over load the download time.

I recently switched to Minetest NeXt as my default game, that is my vote.
The good work of minetest_game should not be wasted, NeXt builds on that but with the advantage of a small dev team. Bundled with other games it becomes a useful and gentle starting place for beginners, what it lacked as the only minetest_game now becomes an advantage.

Finally I have decided for which game to vote!

I vote for Carbone.

Reason: Of all the subgames which have been suggested, this is the subgame with the most gameplay-related stuff in it. It features 3D mobs and for me, the mobs seem to work pretty stable. I am glad to see the return of the dungeon master and oerkki. A lot of crafting recipes are available, which is great for creativity needs.
Also, it has a good polished customized interface. However, Carbone seems to be far from finished. There could be even more mobs, there are also balancing issues. I think the subgame becomes too easy as soon you have obtained all the diamond stuff. But still, Carbone is the best choice and the best minetest_game improvement subgame in my eyes.

Minetest NeXt is a nice little improvement over minetest_game, however, the changes are too few and too subtle to earn a vote. For me, this subgame feels like little more than a different texture pack and a slightly improved HUD. But apart from that, the changes are minimal. The contestants are too strong.

Nodetest was a strong contestant, but it won’t get my vote. Nodetest is interesting because is has a pretty good mapgen for the surface area, creating vast terrains. It is nice to be able to run along the surface and just explore. This goes very well along with its preinstalled texture pack. Apparently a good texture pack can really make a big difference.
The gameplay is lacking content, but it comes with some interesting crafting ideas and takes some interesting other approaches. But there is not a lot of content there and it seems to me that this subgame is still way too underdeveloped. Because Nodetest looks like it goes a different direction, I will keep an eye on it and see what the future brings.

I have not tried Dreambuilder yet, but I am not really interested in it.

I agree that Ethereal is very nice. But this is not a subgame, it is a mod. So it doesn’t count.

PPS: Oops! I wasn’t talking about Nodetopia, I was talking about Nodetest, actually. Sorry! I edited the post.

I like carbone too but have discovered that I can't make bronze ingots anymore. I also like adventuretest but it needs a better way to handle information. I have no clue how to use magic and the experience is very hard to get. Only through mining and smelting have I been able to get much experience.

I vote for Tutorial. This includes both the world and subgame.

Reason:
It’s a tutorial and thus intended to lower the entry barrier for newcomers. It is generic and more or less subgame-neutral. The knowledge should be applicable to all other subgames, because they all use the same engine. IMO Minetest needs this, because in-game documentation is currently nearly non-existant, apart from crafting guides, maybe. From my experience, it is also quite tricky to get into the genre, esecially when the game itself does not explain anything.
The feedback in the thread has been mostly positive so far.

Disclaimer: I am the developer of said subgame and world. But it’s not forbidden to vote for your own creations. :)
I surely won’t play the tutorial a lot but I hope it’s not a problem here. It’s a tutorial, duh! ;-)

I vote for ''Tutorial'' (both game and map)
For being deloped as a tool, a adventure map, and a helping game.
Also I vote for ''Ethereal''
As a ''demo'' of what v7 mapgen can do, and even a good adventure map, for people that think that Minetest is just a rip-off from Minecraft, to show them the other gaming style that they can get with Minetest.
