help installing texture packs

i am playing on minetest 0.4.12 and i have put the texture pack folder directly into the texture folder but it doesn't appear to do anything even when i select it from the texture list in the launcher, what am i doing wrong?

Seems by this and your other posts that texture packs are kicking your butt.

yeah i think it's because most of them aren't for 0.4.12 XD

I'm pretty sure texture packs aren't version specific. They may be missing a texture or two if they haven't been updated for a long time. But they are all installed the same ways and should work for the most part.

i've been taking them out of their zip files and putting them in the texture folder, they show up on the list of textures available but with no preview and when i select them and play the game nothing has changed

So say you download "mynewpack.zip". You unzip the mynewpack.zip into your minetest/textures folder. There should be a new folder in the textures folder named "mynewpack" with all the new texture images inside.

Then when you open Minetest client. You should see your new "mynewpack" listed in the texture pack tab listing. You simply select "mynewpack" and then start a game, or join a server as normal.

You should see the replaced images are in use now.
Is this how you are going about this?

yup that's pretty much it, so either these texture packs changes are miniscule and can't be noticed or they just don't seem to work or i'm mising something here

i put the john smith pack in the textures folder and it is working fine so i think it's definitely relevent which version it is for since the john smith one i downloaded was for 0.4.12 but it's the only one i've found for this version, i can't seem to find any others
