I edited PilzAdam's item_drop mod.
I disabled dropping but kept picking up and
I made it compatible with my version of the builtin_item mod.
According to the three posts (↓), this mod has >+9002.

This mod has been moved to https://github.com/minetest-mods/item_drop/. My repository only has changed default settings because that mod drops items when digging by default.
