The secret realm (floating islands)
For you who dont know, there is a secret realm in minetest: floatlands
The realm is disable as default, but you can enable it by adding:
mgv7_spflags = mountains,ridges,floatlands to minetest.conf, or use the attached mod.
This works in mapegen v7 (the pictures are taken in minetest 0.4.15)
The islands can be really huge, and appear at the height 1280 as default
Helpful commands to get up there:
/grant singleplayer all
/teleport 0 1280 0
download/file.php?mode=view&id=9465

If they hang in the air, do they cover sunlight?

looks like the shadow stops after about 150, but i think the water will keep falling.

Well that basically is the floatlands flag.
But how did you exactly "found" this?
I mean not that anyone would go flying into the air seamlessly.

I think these floatlands are really interesting.
Another interesting property of the floatlands in Minetest Game is that they have all the ores at peak probability, because they are above Y=1024. See also: http://wiki.minetest.net/Ores

I might add an optional way to get up there in mgv7. Mostly my intention was for mods to provide a way up somehow.
Note currently the biomes are a mess up there with underwater trees, grass etc. We don't yet have a dedicated set of biomes for the floatlands but i'm working on it. The next set of floatland biomes will be very simple and temporary.

i remember that you once posted something about a mapgen with "world pillars" - natural generated mountain pillars that connect the surface with the floatland layers above...
so either that or giant trees (Yggdrasil) to reach the next layer.

I generated a world that had land connected to the float lands, I think it might have been because I specified extremely tall mountains.
It is a damn cool +1 feature though!

Is it possible to have multiple floatland islands at various heights from say 1280 up to 20000?

Yes it will be possible in 5.3.0 if the new floatland generation code is merged.

I've recently entered a new world in mapgen v_7, and I've been thinking there should be a "legitimate" way to use the flying feature of the game rather than just grantme fly and press K.
What would be nice is a new mineral, found in the lower floatlands up to ~200m that might be reached by climbing / building. This new mineral might construct a tool / food that gives limited flights, or flight that consumes health - something requiring the user to plan carefully before lifting off.
At present I've got a workaround using autohotkey: when I press K a timer waits ten seconds before pressing K again, ending the flight. Another flight can't be taken for twenty seconds. It also enables / disables the auto forward, resulting in an extended, controllable leap. Having limited flight time makes it more challenging and fun.
Having found out about the 1200m+ floatlands, I'll have to look into a mod or Plain Ordinary cheating to get me there.
