[MOD] Minecraft-like Bows!!! [2.0][bow]

Descripton:

This mod adds bows. To charge the bow you have to hold the RMB. If the bow is full charged the arrow makes more damage and the arrow is much faster than a low charged bow. To shoot the arrow you have to release the RMB.

This Mod works with Mobs Redo!

  • -Charged bow isn't shown in creative inventory anymore. [1.0]
    -Bugfix: Game crashed when rejoing server with this mod. [1.0]
    -Fixed arrow physics: gravitational acceleration:-9.81m/s², speed: ~195km/h [1.1]
    -The arrow uses the gravity setting. [1.2]
    -You can set the arrow lifetime after hitting a wall in the settings [1.2]
    -You can set the bow charging time in the settings [1.2]
    -Shooting on unknown nodes wouldn't crash the game anymore. [1.2]

All people who downloaded this mod before this reply please update the mod with the latest version. There was a bug that the game crashed when rejoining in a world with arrows!

Well, that's a horrible generalization.

Copying a copyrighted work is a violation of copyright, and this would never be the basis of a good functional open source project.

In reality, even MC copied *ideas* and concepts from other games that existed before MC did (infiniminer, etc.). So taking ideas from MC and applying them is perfectly fine (and legal) as long as no code or artwork is copied.

You didn't copy any textures, right? ;)

@Andrey01 just because MC has something doesn't mean MT cant have it too, IMO the way MC's bows are is the best way to do it.

Interesting how you did it. You just permanently query the right mouse button of all players. Damn, why didn't I have this idea earlier? xD
Still, I think in the long run an engine change is inevitable to keep the complexity outside of Lua: https://github.com/minetest/minetest/issues/5212

But thanks for finding this little trick. It seems to work just fine.

The mod still needs some work IMO.
The arrow physics feel very wrong. The arrow just flies very slowly, compared to other bow mods.
Another problem with this mod is that it touches the player physics directly which automatically makes this mod incompatible with all mods which also alter player physics.

This looks like just what I needed for MCL2. I will probably not use this mod verbatim, but I might eventually just adapt your rightclick trick.

And here I give my standard request to write a few help texts for the items, using the mod doc_items from the Help modpack. Here's the doc_items API documentation (the quick start is enough): http://repo.or.cz/minetest_doc_items.gi ... AD:/API.md

PS: Just because some idea is from another game doesn't mean it's a bad idea. The fact that it's from MC should NOT matter at all, the only thing which matters is whether you consider it a good gameplay mechanic (or not).
I think fluid charging is generally a much needed feature in MT. In fact, that's the whole point of having a bow in the first place! Almost all past bow mods just had a single fixed bow strength which is definitely not something to be proud of.

Well ok, this mod is good (i agree with it). Bt i think we should invent as more things as it is possible, i mean mods. Maybe we could increase number of people in Minetest as these mods nowhere exist in other games except Minetest itself. That`s why many people don`t want to play here because too many ideas taken from Minecraft. What do you think?

  • -Arrows fall with an acceleration of 9.81m/s²
    -If the bow is full charged arrows have a speed of ~195km/h

You should get the value from the setting "movement_gravity".

Edit: Done.
  • Sounds would be nice.
  • Shooting on unknown nodes crashes the game.
  • The bow charging is a bit slow.
  • The arrow's pitch isn't changed. (To do this you can add a bone to the model and set the bone position.)
  • Maybe add an attached particle spawner to the arrow.
  • You don't need the dropped_bow item. Just drop the uncharged bow.

When I drop the uncharged bow the dropped item is very big and the half of it is in the ground, because of the wield scale.

Yes, it is nice for MT to have fresh and new ideas, but there is nothing wrong with borrowing ideas from MC, and sometimes MC gets something so perfect that there is no better way to-do it.
