Paint.NET is advanced enough while still being somewhat simple.

For simple things with graphics, I use IrfanView.

It is a nice imageviewer that can manipulate images (resize, color, contrast, insert text etc),
and it also has a paintmode.

You can use MTpaint if you wish: http://mtpaint.sourceforge.net/
It runs in Linux and Windows.
Have a nice day! :D

Open Synaptic and enter paint in the search window. You should receive at least 8 returns.

--- I have heard people recommend Pinta in the past.

In all honesty, if you will just be doing simple pixel work, Gimp is your best choice.

Inkscape is a very useful tool to have as well.

Krita is very good too. It has settings which make it very easy to design a seamless texture.

But I would stick to using Gimp for a while, get to know it, there are plenty of places on the web to get written and video tutorials, etc., and it just has all the basics you will need.
If you try to learn too much at once, you can make it harder on yourself, and chance getting burnout, quickly.

If you want something similar to MS Paint, but more advanced, try Kolourpaint.

If you want a good alternative for Paint.NET, give a try to Pinta.
