So I want to use this as a basic compass that points north... so I can teach kids about direction... is there an easy way to do this? Should I just book mark a location as the North Pole?
everything can be a learning experience...

That would probably be the simplest way to do it. But it probably wouldn't be to difficult to just modify the code to always point north. You might want to start with an earlier simpler version, like this one: viewtopic.php?id=3785

I have been busy with work and haven't messed with this code in a long time, I need to check and see if it even still works with the most recent version of minetest.

It's off-topic but kind of related;
ExeterDad shared these textures for the minimap.
just add to 'textures/base/pack' folder.

might also try out Wuzzy's Orienteering mod: A collection of tools to help you orient yourselves in the world, such as compass, altimeter, etc.

You already had a look at the other compass-mods ?

Also, there is a small+simple mod 'blocky' / test_node,
that has a block with letters N/E/S/W on its sides.

But that mod has no readme/license,
and I don't remember where I downloaded it...

Does anyone know how to get in touch with AntumMT about the modernized fork of compassgps ? The change from get_look_yaw to the new get_look_horizontal and other updates are in a branch called remove_deprecated and the branch was never merged. I don't understand why. If there is no way to reach him,
Kilarin, can you make the modernizations at remove_deprecated to yours please (since there is apparently no forum post for AntumMT's)?

:edit: apparently I got lost on GitHub's fork view and the link to the remove_deprecated branch linked from AntumMT already leads to a pull request on yours, Kilarin. Please accept all of these important pull requests.

:edit: I manually applied all of the pull requests to make a modernized fork here: https://github.com/expertmm/compassgps

My apologies. I've gotten busy with work and neglected keeping up with my minetest mods.
I'll try to make a hole for it this week and get them updated and accept pull requests etc.

I've merged all of the pull requests except for the russian localization one. That one needs some conflicts resolved, I'll get to it shortly.
