[Mod] bell that sounds each hour [bell]
This is a small mod that adds a bell that tells you the hour. Like a normal church bell which used to be found in many German villages and town halls, it sounds as many times as the hour calls for.
In emergencies (i.e. mobs attacking en mass), players may ring the bell manually.
The mod has been active on the King Arthurs Land server for some years now. It was originally created for that server.
The normal bell that chimes the hour ought to be placed by moderators only in order to avoid spam. I've added a version of the bell that looks the same, can actually be crafted, can still be ringed manually (hear distance is smaller), but does not chime the hour automaticly.
Important: You have to add your own sounds. Just create a folder sounds/ in the mod's directory and drop files bell_bell.ogg and bell_small.ogg in it.

Depends on: default (optionally - if you want to craft the bell)

Idea: different bells (steel, copper ...) with different soundfiles for them.Sokomine wrote:mod that adds a bell that tells you the hour.
You have to add your own sounds... bell_bell.ogg and bell_small.ogg

+1 I think that the bell should cost only ingots, not blocks. What do you think?

There are churchbells that weight 50+ tons.Hume2 wrote:+1 I think that the bell should cost only ingots, not blocks

Re: [Mod] bell that sounds each hour [bell]
It uses the server's clock, so IRL time. That also means that it might be different from your IRL time if you're not on the same timezone as the server. For this reason it also might ring 2AM two times in a day once every year.ManElevation wrote:Nice mod! +1

Why doesn't anyone use MT time? If you want to know the real time, there are clocks everywhere, and there's the timezone issue, as mentioned. But there's basically nothing that tells MT time.

RL time.ManElevation wrote: It sounds every 1 hour, mt or rl time?
That's a nice idea. The soundfiles are a bit problematic. The King Arthurs Land server has an excellent sound file but I'm not sure enough how free it is. Realisticly, the larger bells would probably have to be made from bronze.hajo wrote: Idea: different bells (steel, copper ...) with different soundfiles for them.
The reason why it costs blocks instead of ingots is that I wanted it to be pretty expensive. Historical bells in churches and town halls where very expensive, massive things. The second reason is that the bell produces sound. There ought to be some effort behind flooding your environment with any kind of noise.Hume2 wrote: +1 I think that the bell should cost only ingots, not blocks. What do you think?
In this particular case it would be very bad if the bell would sound each MT hour. An average MT day lasts 20 minutes. Less than one RL minute per hour. The bell would be sounding almost constantly.v-rob wrote: Why doesn't anyone use MT time? If you want to know the real time, there are clocks everywhere, and there's the timezone issue, as mentioned. Maybe a config-option for setting hours and number of chimes ?Sokomine wrote:RL time... bad if the bell would sound each MT hour. An average MT day lasts 20 minutesManElevation wrote:It sounds every 1 hour, mt or rl time?
Eg. so you could have just 1 chime at 5:00, 12:00 and 17:00 MT-time.
BTW, I assume the bell uses the timezone of the server ?

Re: [Mod] bell that sounds each hour [bell]
You can sorta avoid the time zone issue by using the UTC time. Maybe that will work. IDK if it is possible to see what time zone the player is in. If so, you can add/subtract from UTC to show them the appropriate time. If not, UTC works fine.
Re: [Mod] bell that sounds each hour [bell]
My point is the low usefulness of bell-chimes telling the time from some other timezone.csirolli wrote:You can sorta avoid the time zone issue by using the UTC time..

Re: [Mod] bell that sounds each hour [bell]
In a way you're right. Yet the vast majority of timezones change the hour at the same time. So the information you'll get is at least "another hour has started". This might alert you to take a look at your local clock in case you got carried away. And even if not - it's just some ambience.hajo wrote: My point is the low usefulness of bell-chimes telling the time from some other timezone.

Re: [Mod] bell that sounds each hour [bell]
I just did a reworking on this mod and added a few features, for those interested:
- Mesecon triggers
- Optional settings to have the big bells toll at dawn, noon, dusk, and/or midnight (each individually toggleable and settable to a number of tolls). You can also turn off the server time tolling. By default the mod behaves as it did before.
- 3D model for the bell rather than a plantlike sprite
- Sound file included
