[Mod] Pig Iron [pigiron]
[Mod] Pig Iron [pigiron]
This mod exists to add a little progression to the game so that steel isn't so easy to come by :)
- Iron Ingots can be made by smelting Iron Ore in a furnace
- Charcoal can be made by cooking Tree's in a furnace
- 1x Iron Ingot and 3x Charcoal create a mix that is smelted into 1x Steel Ingot
- Iron Ingots can be made into blocks which can be used to make stairs
- Iron blocks and stairs can rust when near water, cook in furnace to remove rust
- A bucket of water surrounded by Iron Blocks returns 8x Rusted Iron Blocks
- Added Iron tools which is better than stone but worse than steel/bronze
- Switched Bronze and Steel tool strength since steel is stronger in real life
Dependencies: requires default and will use stairs, farming and lucky_block if enabled
ContentDB: https://content.minetest.net/packages/TenPlus1/pigiron
Licence: MIT
Lucky Blocks: 8

Re: [Mod] Pig Iron [pigiron]
Our hero! Are you planning on opening a pr on github for this? :D (but name it pot-iron instead of pig-iron or even just iron please).
Hey, what can i say? I'm the bad guy.
Re: [Mod] Pig Iron [pigiron]
It has been known as Pig Iron for some time so the name will stay: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pig_iron
It would be nice to have additional iron tools and override the steel one's to make them stronger than bronze, will work on that next.

Re: [Mod] Pig Iron [pigiron]
Actually when someone makes pig-iron they make a funnel shape (usually with sand) or a hole in the ground and smelt it in there. Seeing how smelting is done in a furnace and the use of charcoal i believe it would be more correct to assume the player is making wrought iron, which is sometimes called charcoal-iron.

Re: [Mod] Pig Iron [pigiron]
Alternatively you could call it "Crude Iron" (It is also mentioned at wikipedia.) but I am fine with pig iron.TenPlus1 wrote:It has been known as Pig Iron for some time so the name will stay: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pig_iron
Historically, there should be copper tools, too.TenPlus1 wrote: It would be nice to have additional iron tools and override the steel one's to make them stronger than bronze, will work on that next.
Oh and can add Cast iron, but maybe this is too much.

Can your read this?
Re: [Mod] Pig Iron [pigiron]
Copper seems like a soft metal, kinda like gold so I wouldnt imagine much use from tools made from it. Bronze on the other hand gives copper a good use and makes them into decent tools, although like I mentioned above steel needs to be stronger than bronze.
Re: [Mod] Pig Iron [pigiron]
Yeah, but people in the past used such tools. Before they got access to tin.TenPlus1 wrote:.. so I wouldnt imagine much use from tools made from it.

Re: [Mod] Pig Iron [pigiron]
Hrm, good point... I could change the description to read Wrought Iron although the mod has already been named :)
Re: [Mod] Pig Iron [pigiron]
The description being changed is good enough for me =).TenPlus1 wrote:Hrm, good point... I could change the description to read Wrought Iron although the mod has already been named :)

Re: [Mod] Pig Iron [pigiron]
Welp, turns out none of the descriptions actually use Pig Iron so that was easy :)

Re: [Mod] Pig Iron [pigiron]
But … does it go “oink oink”?
Re: [Mod] Pig Iron [pigiron]
Yeah.. and what if the mod detects mob_animals the recipe changes so that to create pig iron you have to combine pig-meat and an iron lump and then smelt it... and when your smelting it you hear pig screams <insert demonic laugh>...Wuzzy wrote:But … does it go “oink oink”?

Re: [Mod] Pig Iron [pigiron]
This is great as I’m removing mese and diamond tools from my game (too weird).

Re: [Mod] Pig Iron [pigiron]
Should be an armor set to go along with the pig iron. (No pork, though)
What is SCP-055?

Re: [Mod] Pig Iron [pigiron]
There's the trouble with default (and many other mods) requiring steel ingots for a lot of craft receipes that rely on steel not suddenly beeing over-expensive. Other than that the mod is a very fine idea. Perhaps combined with some other mods? Maikaumines sticks and stones server uses some very nice textures and intresting craft receipes for more expensive metalworks. RealTest also comes with a very intresting way and complex machinery to handle ores.
A list of my mods can be found here.
Re: [Mod] Pig Iron [pigiron]
Hi,
when i use pigiron mod and moreblocks mod together, iron lumps will be burned in default steel ingots. Without moreblocks mod i get pigiron ingots. It will be great when you can fix this problem.

Re: [Mod] Pig Iron [pigiron]
Are you sure it's moreblocks that's to blame ? We run pigiron and moreblocks on Xanadu and smelting iron into ingots works fine.
Re: [Mod] Pig Iron [pigiron]
Hi,
yes i have an new map with last pigiron mod, moreblocks mod and unified inventory mod. When i burn iron lump i get an steel inngot.

Re: [Mod] Pig Iron [pigiron]
I've tried something around and it works if I insert blue line:
-- Override Iron Lump -> Steel Recipe
minetest.clear_craft({output = "default:steel_ingot"})
minetest.register_craft({
type = "cooking",
output = "pigiron:iron_ingot",
recipe = "default:iron_lump",
})
I'm not sure if that's right :)

Re: [Mod] Pig Iron [pigiron]
The clear_craft() will indeed remove the old recipe but in doing so it removes other needed recipes as well like steel blocks into 9x ingots, and steel stairs back into ingots.
I've added a clear_craft to remove the default:iron_lump cooking recipe though as this seems safer, git updated so please download latest and try.
