[Poll] How did you find out about MT?

by MCL » Post

Hi, in this poll you will answer how did you find out about MT.
I found it while searching my repository's distro in 2016 and found MT by accident. I decided to install it (0.4.13) and created a new world in Minetest Game (I didn't even know other games existed back then) and my first impression was surprisingly good but ater about an hour it turned into "is this a joke?!" feeling.

I decided to uninstall it and then I noticed some mods which were in the software repositories too. I reinstalled Minetest and installed the technic mod I enabled it and I was impressed! Then I tried to find if there are more mods and I found these forums, when I saw the amount of there were I was extremely surprised. I installed some of them and thought that Minetest Game with mods was way better than MC... and I was right!

Around 2017 I started learning Lua and in June I wrote my first mod. I continued to write small mods that add a few new tools and ores. In August, 2018 I started working on my first game (which died a few weeks after release). I created my MT Forums account and created a thread about my game. I got mostly positive feedback but I had to cancel it due to problems with mods and licensing.

7/3/2022 EDIT: The game I mentioned in the post is now up for download!

I was given a RaspberryPi for Christmas 2 years ago and found an unplayable version of MC on it. This was my first exposure to any voxel game. I searched Debian for a reasonable replacement and came across MT. It was okay but not great on the Pi. MT did run superbly on my laptop. ;-]

I wonder why did they bundle Minecraft Pi instead of Minetest with some removed feautres (to run smoothly on the Pi) and a game made for the Pi

Readed about Minetest for first time from a blog about free (libre) software some time ago. But I never played Minecraft actively (probably once or twice about 7 years ago) or other sandbox games.

I never got attention of this kind of games until 2013 or so, when I started to hear about open source alternatives like Terasology or Minetest itself. But I never played MT so actively until june 2017, when one day I started to crawl into my distro packages and finally installed and tested this game.

The OUYA game store, lol. Horrible experience, just like the platform itself. Didn’t try it out again for years. When I did, it was probably on another rounds of googling the possible existence of FOSS counterparts to popular game titles. Mostly due to ideological reasons: I like to contribute back to games I play and I rather not spend hours of work only to increase the value of someone else’s private intellectual property. 8-)

Exact same for me, it was Minetest 0.3.1 on Ubuntu 12.04, I did not know at this time that it was awfully outdated and that the current dev version was 0.4.8.

They were talking about wonderful Minecraft buildings, for example, King's Landing, and one user said it was best to create them in Minetest because it was free and so anyone could enjoy them.

I discovered Minetest a few years ago when I used Ubuntu. I opened the Software Center and Minetest was advertised on the first page there. At first, I thought Minetest was some development/testing tool for Minecraft ;)

Tired of playing the games I was playing, I searched a new game in my distrib repos. Never heard of voxel game before that. Found Minetest, looked interresting. This was four years ago, I never had to search for another game since :)

While waiting for No Man's Sky release. It was very long ordeal and, finally, impatiently I tried Minecraft. Now, from the perspective of time I must say it was kind of act of despair. Then I looked further on Google for other open world games, among other there was Minetest. But I didn't enjoy it much at first -- it was just slighly better than MC, it seemed to me -- only when I realized that it allowed much more creative freedom than Voxelands, which in turn was the very first voxel game I truly enjoyed.

The problem with Minetest is its name. I don't think it should be changed, but it may be really confusing to some user as they may mistake it for a Minecraft testing tool / a crappy MC clone that's just a test and is extremely buggy and unstable.

I agree with migdyn, this name is sort of misleading.

The Linux Mint Software repos about 4-5 years ago, then again about 6 months to a year later from a friend that finally got me into it by playing with some friends.

Totally agree, that was my very first thought when I discovered Minetest (quickly resolved). Also it seems that no one is able to say where does this name come from.
