Modding Competition: Oceans

by Brian Gaucher » Post

Yeah, this forum was lost during the recent issues.
I'll refill this post soon

Prize
A 10$ USD will be given to the winner (winner will be contacted separetely). Second and third will receive honorable mention. In the case the first place winner chooses to decline, the prize will be given to second place.

Requirement
Your mod must be related to the ocean. Especially enriching survival. It can be biomes, mobs, plants, nodes, tools, etc. Your mod must have a forum and be hosted on Github, GitLab, etc. Zip-files do not qualify. WIP or incomplete mods may be submitted.

Judging
Mods must usable (if WIP, only complete features will be judged, others ignored). I myself will be judging. More people may be chosen. (Moderators interrested in helping PM)
Judging includes: Code quality, performance, easthetics (if applicable), stability, novelty, features, personal enjoyment.

Timeline
At least one month. Currently target: Mid-April. Target is flexible.

Due to the server rollback, the deadline is delayed to the end of May. Sorry for that.
Spoiler
Q: I already made a mod related to the ocean. Can I submit it?
A: Of course. But why not try to improve it too.

Q: My mod [would] relate to rivers. Does that count?
A: If it relates to both, fine. But it must relate to the ocean.

Q: I don't have any ideas.
A: Try making some underwater mobs, fish, mammals. More plants, corals, seaweed, ruins, underwater structures, boats, subs. Underwater construction nodes, diving equipment, fish farming, biomes, etc. See Facedeer's ideas

I wasn't able to find any cached copies of this forum. If anyone can find one, I'd be grateful.

Since cached copies disappear, If you find one, I'd appreciate screenshots.

I have finished ranking all the mods
Tides
5 out of 10

I appreciate what people are trying to do, pushing the Minetest engine, doing similar proof of concepts. But I wasn't able to get it to work. And even if it did work, it has the side-effects of removing all other water. And doesn't add much to ocean survival, or creative building.

AirTanks
Works well

AirTanks super useful in-game

Breathing apparatus also useful. Only one bug found. If already drowning it doesn't start using your bottles.

Easthetics work.

9 out of 10

Could be improved: Use fuel to fill tanks.

Good code

Very useful mod, one of my favourites.

Pontoons
8 out of 10

Decent easthetics
Changes: I disabled wood as water pointable, kept logs as water pointable, and enabled wood and steel pontoons. Changing the recipe to use tin instead of steel would give tin more uses, and make sense since steel would rust, tin doesn't as much.

Good code

Pontoons and AirTanks have conflicting recipes, Perhaps airtanks could use buckets in its recipe, or use a breathing apparatus (nozzle) or a pontoon block could require sticks for internal structure.

The mod is useful in survival.

Sounding Lines

6 out of 10

Decent easthetics, does what it says, nice small mod.

Change, I'd change the recipe to use string rather than wool.

Somewhat useful, but not very helpful in survival.

Xblox

8 out of 10
Great easthetics, though I can clearly see some inspiration from classic Mario games.

Some blocks seem better suited for building on land, some blocks are better for in water, easthetically.

Code quality is acceptable, it's well organized, but a few comments wouldn't hurt. Recipes are consistent and reasonable.

Quite nice for building, I'd build a house with the ocean bricks, but it includes many earthy nodes, which makes it more than an ocean construction mod.

Xocean

9 out of 10

Nice easthetics, they really fit in with the Minetest theme.

Everything of this mod is underwater,

Code quality is good, there were a few comments, but a couple more wouldn't hurt, especially so people can understand the coral placement logic. Recipes are coherent, but circle ocean bricks doesn't have any recipe.

The corals are nice, though I must not have caught an area with too many corals,

I sort of feel like this could be split into 3 mods, xcorals, ocean blocks, and ocean mobs, which would let people chose what they want, and develop each mod more easily.

And I have evaluated the mods
First Place
xocean
Would be better as a mod pack, but great job.

Second Place
Airtanks
Excellent work, extremely useful.

Third Place
xblox
Has more than just ocean material, but the ocean blocks are cool.

Fourth Place
Pontoons
I'd change the defaults but quite useful.

Fifth Place
Sounding lines
Useful for measuring.

Sixth Place
Tides
Nice proof of concept, but not too useful in survival.

Re: Modding Competition: Oceans

My main goal of this competition was to improve oceans, not give away 10$ (check UCP inbox). So it would be cool to eventually have an OceanTest game. But to start we could start with an ocean modpack. Would anyone be interrested in that?

The modpack could include (for example): airtanks, pontoons, sounding lines, ocean fish, ocean mobs, ocean dolphins, ocean blocks, extra corals, more boats, extra seaweed, sunken ships, ocean crops, ocean decorations, air generator (to replace water with air in built houses), and much more.

Who's interested?

Sounds cool there is already a subgame based on oceans: https://discord.gg/JAXUE4D
