Mods are separated software to be downloaded+installed to add new features, right?

I didn't downloaded nor installed any mod. It's a freshly installed Minetest. The list of mods is empty.

Open a terminal and enter the lines as follows:

Code: Select all

gdb minetest
r
# join your world
# wait for crash
bt
# crash info is here. copy to a new post (code tags btw)
PS: Also check minetest --version. Anything lower than 5.* is outdated.

You can get the latest stable version from the PPA here. https://launchpad.net/~minetestdevs/+ar ... ntu/stable

You can also get minetest as a snap or flatpak if you prefer.

So, if "gdb" is a valid command now: run it using the lines I specified above. "bt" and "r" are commands for the gdb command line only.
r = run
bt = stack backtrace

The PPA above is a good choice, try it.

Removed old version 0.4.x.
Installed new stable version from the suggested PPA.
Minetest still crashes.
Now I'm doing the gdb thing, stay tuned.

Oh wait, I know this one from my R300 Radeon GPU (laptop). Mesa3d had a bug in the processing pipeline regarding llvm or something like that. I can no longer find the link to the report, but updating Mesa to a recent version did the trick. I compiled it from source, but newer releases should contain that fix.

If that does not help for you, I can only suggest to look out for another graphics driver (if there's any).

EDIT: If needed, I'll check the modification date and Mesa version on my laptop later. Commenting out the clearZBuffer lines (there's also one in sky) would also be possible to get Minetest to run.

I tried to update Mesa driver with no results, I'm still at 18.0.5 version. Now I'm tring to update all the distro, it will take time, and then again to update Mesa.

It works! I upgraded the Lubuntu/Ubuntu distro, now I have the 19.0.8 Mesa version and Minetest works. It is incredibly slow, with 0..1 FPS (the laptop is quite old) but it works.

Solved, thank you.

What are the specs of your laptop? Have you tried turning down your view range and graphics settings? At one point I was playing minetest on a Pentium 4 with 1GB RAM, running Lubuntu. It was kinda painful.

I just saw you have the same or very similar graphics card as me (r300_dri.so). If you:
1) disable the stars in the sky
2) disable the wielded item draw code
3) lower the view range below 20
4) and set the near_plane to 0.5 or higher

you could get up to 12 FPS in a simple forest. I wrote and tested an NPC mod using this hardware, but playing serious isn't possible. Blame ATI/AMD for dropping their old driver binaries, it feels entirely software-rendered by now. Using Windows Vista or XP could actually result in better FPS - I got around 25 somewhere around Minetest 0.4.15 but cannot test it any more: moving its partition using gparted broke the OS.
