Minetest doesn't play world! Lubuntu [SOLVED]
Linux Lubuntu.
I reach the Minetest main window, I select my newly created world, I click on Play, I see the loading bar (with cloud background) and it reaches "Done!", then the window closes and nothing happen.

Re: Minetest doesn't play world! Lubuntu
Can you list your enabled mods in that world.
Re: Minetest doesn't play world! Lubuntu
Mods are separated software to be downloaded+installed to add new features, right?
I didn't downloaded nor installed any mod. It's a freshly installed Minetest. The list of mods is empty.

Re: Minetest doesn't play world! Lubuntu
Open a terminal and enter the lines as follows:
PS: Also check minetest --version. Anything lower than 5.* is outdated.
Code: Select all
gdb minetest
r
# join your world
# wait for crash
bt
# crash info is here. copy to a new post (code tags btw)

minetest --version
Minetest 0.4.13
Using Irrlicht 1.8.3
Build info: VER=0.4.13 BUILD_TYPE=None RUN_IN_PLACE=0 USE_GETTEXT=1 USE_SOUND=1 USE_CURL=1 USE_FREETYPE=1 USE_LUAJIT=1 STATIC_SHAREDIR="/usr/share/games/minetest"
It is the version downloaded and installed with apt-get install minetest. If it is (0.x <<<<<<<< 5.x !!!) outdated give to lubuntu crew an hint to update it please.
gdb not found, I installed it.
bt not found, I don't know what packet I have to install.
r not found, I receive a suggestion to install r-cran-littler packet but I cannot because i cannot connect to it.archive.ubuntu.com... I can try tomorrow if you think it's usefull.

Re: Minetest doesn't play world! Lubuntu
You can get the latest stable version from the PPA here. https://launchpad.net/~minetestdevs/+ar ... ntu/stable
You can also get minetest as a snap or flatpak if you prefer.

Re: Minetest doesn't play world! Lubuntu
So, if "gdb" is a valid command now: run it using the lines I specified above. "bt" and "r" are commands for the gdb command line only.
r = run
bt = stack backtrace
The PPA above is a good choice, try it.

bt = stack backtrace

Re: Minetest doesn't play world! Lubuntu
Removed old version 0.4.x.
Installed new stable version from the suggested PPA.
Minetest still crashes.
Now I'm doing the gdb thing, stay tuned.

Re: Minetest doesn't play world! Lubuntu
Oh wait, I know this one from my R300 Radeon GPU (laptop). Mesa3d had a bug in the processing pipeline regarding llvm or something like that. I can no longer find the link to the report, but updating Mesa to a recent version did the trick. I compiled it from source, but newer releases should contain that fix.
If that does not help for you, I can only suggest to look out for another graphics driver (if there's any).
EDIT: If needed, I'll check the modification date and Mesa version on my laptop later. Commenting out the clearZBuffer lines (there's also one in sky) would also be possible to get Minetest to run.

Re: Minetest doesn't play world! Lubuntu
I tried to update Mesa driver with no results, I'm still at 18.0.5 version. Now I'm tring to update all the distro, it will take time, and then again to update Mesa.
Re: Minetest doesn't play world! Lubuntu
It works! I upgraded the Lubuntu/Ubuntu distro, now I have the 19.0.8 Mesa version and Minetest works. It is incredibly slow, with 0..1 FPS (the laptop is quite old) but it works.
Solved, thank you.

Re: Minetest doesn't play world! Lubuntu [SOLVED]
What are the specs of your laptop? Have you tried turning down your view range and graphics settings? At one point I was playing minetest on a Pentium 4 with 1GB RAM, running Lubuntu. It was kinda painful.

Re: Minetest doesn't play world! Lubuntu [SOLVED]
I just saw you have the same or very similar graphics card as me (r300_dri.so). If you:
1) disable the stars in the sky
2) disable the wielded item draw code
3) lower the view range below 20
4) and set the near_plane to 0.5 or higher
you could get up to 12 FPS in a simple forest. I wrote and tested an NPC mod using this hardware, but playing serious isn't possible. Blame ATI/AMD for dropping their old driver binaries, it feels entirely software-rendered by now. Using Windows Vista or XP could actually result in better FPS - I got around 25 somewhere around Minetest 0.4.15 but cannot test it any more: moving its partition using gparted broke the OS.
