New GPU, less FPS

by burli » Post

Hi,
I had a Nvidia GTX750 and now I upgrade to a AMD RX570. This GPU should be much faster than, but I get horrible framerates, even in simple scenes.

I'm running Ubuntu 18.04 and I use the latest amdgpu Pro driver

Other games and benchmark tests run faster than before.

What's going on?

Are you willing to become familiar with GPU debugging tools? This could help find the problem

Have you made sure that the system is using the GPU and not the iGPU when running Minetest?

My system doesn't have an iGPU

What debugging tools do you mean?

tell me your CPU ...

Passmark:
GeForce GTX 750 : 3326
Radeon RX 570 : 6902
just double the "mark"

userbenchmark:
GeForce GTX 750 : 161th
Radeon RX 570 : 66th
of 621 GraKa

I remember an old Rule, "Ubuntu 18.04" never AMD ..., but make some other own test, and check "Additional Drivers" in Software & Updates ... read forums, maybe better proprietery or else

also in game dont go too high view distance, even then my GTX960 with passmark 5823 will complain,
AND of the GPU is not getting data from the maybe too slow CPU, all its speed is useless then.
There was some webpage somewhere where could check and get answer what is bottleneck or fix together most.

I was lookiing for this one, if ... : GeForce GTX 1660 with 10757 passmark, and I just see got much cheaper, uuhmmm

I've heard of people having weird performance issues with the Pro driver before, maybe give the regular amdgpu driver a try. Just because it says "Pro" doesn't mean it's better, the "pros" who develop ATI/AMD's official drivers have always been pretty poor at their jobs.

I have a FX-6400, so no iGPU. I know, that the CPU is a limiting factor, but not in this case because I have much mor FPS with the GTX750.

The new GPU runs fine on Ubuntu. I have more FPS in a benchmark and more FPS in Minecraft. It's even possible to play Minecraft with a shader.

I get better performance with the Pro driver compared to the latest Mesa driver. And the only difference between amdgpu and amdgpu Pro is an additional OpenCL driver.

The GPU works fine so far.

The GPU works fine, EXCEPT with Minetest.

I have good FPS in a Benchmark and I have good FPS in Minecraft, but in Minetest I just get 30 FPS, even with a view range of 100 blocks, which is ridiculous bad

OpenGL version?
Where it the most time spent? See F6 stats: "renderMap()" timings
Does "enable_vbo = false" change anything?
Does disabling the star rendering change anything? Always `return` here: https://github.com/minetest/minetest/bl ... y.cpp#L257
Does enabling/disabling the shaders, fog, whatsoever change anything?
Look, I programmed a bug for you. >> Mod Search Engine << - Mods by Krock - DuckDuckGo mod search bang: !mtmod <keyword here>

What fps had it been before, with SAME configuration of MT ?
With my GTX 960 I have most 60 fps, and if falling, just restart MTC and all is good.
If it is a setting in MTC had been able to change before also, so that is some of the AMD or the driver for it.
