Skins

Now when you have server-side texture update, you can implement the same thing for player skins. They can be held on server and downloaded during login.

yeah, this is a little bit problematic without centralized server. Maybe just put an url in local player settings, that will point at your skin + add some limitations, of course.

Why centralized server? Player can upload his skin to any of the servers he plays. (if they accept it and have a web form).

or you could just have the player skin uploaded to the server on account creation and have it stored with the player data.

Although this way could become a potential security threat maybe, unless the upload code made sure that it was an image file and under a certain file size maybe.

What if you want different skins for different servers?

Then just change it in your data folder? in MC you have to visit there website and upload a new skin every time you want to change your skin and the changes are not instant.

So just swapping it out of the data folder is a hell of a lot faster.

Although it adds the possibility of viruses, since it's possible to put a virus is certain image files. (Can't remember which though)

Yeah I did mention this above, the thing is viruses can be attached to pretty much anything, but the only system that will likely be damaged by them would be windows systems.

However, if the image was uploaded to the server (windows or linux) and stored with the player data then addition checks could be made during upload.

Or maybe if the server just checked for skins for players in a defined location the upload could be handled by the server admin in a way that suits them best. I.e. web upload, manual upload etc

Use linux or mac.
FYI: Microsoft offers free antivirus software that works very well. It has saved me a lot of times.
