Features for Challenging Gameplay

by jas » Post

Hello,

Two settings that I immediately set, I set in the interest of making the game a little more challenging:

Code: Select all

leaves_style = opaque
opaque_water = true
Image

This is so I cannot tell what is underneath/behind water and water falls; and secondly so that I cannot see where the apples are! What other settings do you know of that may increase difficultly or add some challenge to Minetest gameplay?

You could decrease your brightness or make the day/night cycle super long, or maybe just install some mob mods.

Set the "starting time" to midnight, and turn off the day-night cycle.

Those are both graphical compromises not difficulty increases.

That's actually a really good idea

Also, try out swapping out some of your controls (example: jump key <--> forward key, sneak key <--> inventory key, right key <--> left key, etc...).

Intresting. I wouldn't set these values myself unless the hardware is so absolutely poor that nothing else works. Else I'd always go with less view range than with those visual limitations. Partly transparent leaves and water are just way nicer...But then, my goal isn't hard gameplay.

If you want a challenging gameplay, add hostile mobs that try to kill you. Hunger may also help. In general, BrandonReeses Adventuretest is pretty hard in that regard. And in a game with the not so simple mobs, there's so much out there that's trying to eat you that you won't have an easy time. The sticks&stones server was also extremly hardcore. Didn't manage to get more than a pityful hut there and was too afraid to walk far from it.
A list of my mods can be found here.

Those are not exactly as easy as changing a configuration parameter, but that's mods a beginner can do:

The soft leaves mod by Hamlet (no tree hopping, no cows in trees either).

Hard trees from the same author (I don't know why my visitors are surprised they can't kung fu trees)

Apples and blueberries that have a chance not to regrow. Drastically decrease sapling drops for both.

Disable the minimap's radar mode ;-)

Remove torches, make stone-with-coal flammable so it can be ignited with the flint-and-steel tool.

Make the red mushrooms glow a little. They can be used instead of torches, and because players will manipulate them often, there's a chance they eat one by mistake.

Hard dirt (I don't know why my visitors are surprised they can't dig compact dirt with bare hands), falling dirt and DPS for all falling nodes.

Lava blobs underground (dangerous, but can provide free light - especially if lava is a renewable liquid).

- Make your inventory limited to only the hotbar and crafting grid?
- make your hand reach distance lower?
- make your jump height less than 1 node?

Back in my City of Heroes days, we had something called real man characters, or sometimes ironman characters (no relation to the marvel copyright). You'd make a character and post videos of him leveling and earning badges without using any superpowers. Your only attack was normal punch.

I guess the minetest equivalent would be playing without any tools. : )
