[Fork] Minetest4 [4.19.0-dev]

by rudzik8 » Post

Hello! I'd like to announce that I'm starting to work on a new backport project.

Some of you might know about minetest-luk3yx-4, which was sadly abandoned in Nov 2020. This project forks from it (so, fork from a fork) and backports even more, not only from release 5.0.0, but from the whole 5.x tree. So far I've been able to backport some minor commits from back when the original fork got abandoned, as well as apply a few critical security patches (see new commits).

This fork is made for the purpose of connecting to legacy 0.4.x servers, as well as testing 0.4.x support for modders and game authors.

Spoiler
To clear things up:
  • This is not a "better Minetest" project.
  • This is not an effort to impersonate the official Minetest project.
  • This is not a riot against the 5.0.0 breakage which is more than 5 years old at this point.
  • This is not a box of tasty raspberry donuts.
  • This is a fork of a fork of a voxel game engine thingie.

BTW testing this is very welcome. My testing is limited to a PC running Linux Mint 22.
Please write about any issues here or in the repo.

Is there a list of backported stuff somewhere? Because otherwise the usefulness of this is not obvious.
Is there also a plan document writing down what kind of things you want to backport (and what is considered out of scope)?

I'd consider using it to connect to JT2, the only 0.4.X server I still care about (but sadly it's currently offline).

Oh, and I get an error when opening All Settings. Probably this doesn't like the new settings format?
