A heavily related thread: http://minetest.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=60 See the last posts... my implementation to allow skeletal models for mobs is nearly complete, but needs help.

I saw .3ds in your posts, and gave it a suspicion.

Nah, it was exported as .3ds because the industry is racist against .lwo

But perhaps exporting as .obj would be easier to import to blender.

obj is the easiest and most native format for Blender. But it's for static models only. For animated, .x works in MineTest (with my code at least)

Now that 3D mobs are possible and upstream, I think this thread and the models on it deserve a revive. If the Blender source files are available for what was first posted here, they should be possible and easy to export for MineTest. The x model format is used, which Blender has a built-in exported for (just enable the DirectX exporter in Preferences - Addons). See the default player blend and player.lua script included with minetest_game for how to implement the animations.

If you need the .obj to put into the upstream, then here it is. They're not rigged just so you know.

good manual ...

official tutorials blender

if you've never used a 3d program, I recommend using Wings3D, is much more intuitive, but does not support animation ... I use it to create objects, and then export them to blender to apply textures and animate ...

not get discouraged if at first you do not leave things.
A common practice in 3D, is to first make a sketch, with Lego pieces .. then draw boxes for each piece and use it as a guide to draw ... although it might sound stupid, is a great help even for professionals, many games have been made in this way.

examples of my drawings in Wings3D:

why won't you make proper 3d models? like, smooth ones. or something curious. 2d won't work for this game, no. while you're not releasing minetoon, eh, Gambit?

What are you talking about? None of the models are 2D. Making curved/smooth models would take away from the block style. Unless you forked it to make it a yogdventures alternative.

I wouldn't mind 3d mobs IF they are resource friendly.
