This adds more uses for dirt. You will always have a bunch of the stuff, but there never seemed to be much use for it before. Now there is. The new blocks are just decorative, with corresponding fences and ladders. There are also tools, furnaces, and chests.
The leftmost block is a dirt furnace.

Version .2 adds tools
Version .3 adds chests
Version .4 increased the output of dirt cobblestone, plus I fixed the textures a little :-D
License: WTFPL for all Lua code, CC BY-SA for the textures
Depends: recent Minetest engine and minetest_game
Crafting: Spoiler This is the your basic

Add a steel ingot to that to make a locked dirt chest:

Spoiler Version .3 added chests, which are harder to break than normal chests, since they are made of dirt stone. This is what they look like:

+3 Very good
Now I won't have to re-place the useless dirt again or stash it away in 1865147 chests!

Cool, though I'd rename it some like Terracotta (though that's technically clay) or "Earthen" cause it sounds better than just "Dirt"

Have a bug, if you downloaded version .3, then downloaded the new link. The bug is that the furnace and the chest conflict each other.

The mod's code is under WTFPL, and the textures are under CC BY-SA, so, yes, you can (you must however keep the textures under the same license if you release them).

While I don't exactly maintain this mod, I'm just letting folks know I still have a repo of it at
https://github.com/VanessaE/usesdirt where I've pushed a few changes just to keep it up to date for my game.

Good to know, VanessaE, beacause all the links in the first post are broken because Sendspace deleted the files. >_>

Wonderful idea and mod. However, I request 16x16 textures to fit in with the game.

Someone should make new textures to replace the horrible high resolution ones. Also, it seems that the furnace lets you see through the ground
