[down] onpon4's Unmoderated Survival Server

by onpon4 » Post

Minetest version: 0.4.7 stable
Minetest Game: minetest
Creative: No
Damage: Yes
PvP: Yes
Address: - (Note: this changes periodically; check http://servers.minetest.net/ first to see if it changed.)
Port: -

This is just a personal server I'm running on one of our computers. In general, it'll be up 24/7. I don't have any sort of scripts or macros running that will start it up if it goes down, so if it's down, let me know and I'll put it back up.

There are no rules about destruction of property, no protected areas, or anything like that, and I won't grant any such thing. I also am not going to be controlling the server in any way. Anything goes. No rules on griefing, either; if someone is griefing you, kill them. If you choose to build, you are responsible for safeguarding your creations from other players, not me.

The name of the server admin is Lucifer rather than onpon4 so that I don't have any extra privileges when playing. Chances are you'll never see Lucifer, though he might come in certain extreme circumstances.

I've added the dirtmen, sandmen, rockmen, and oerkki from the Simple Mobs mod.

Sorry to say: I found that there is a bug that crashes the game when a falling node tries to replace one that is buildable_to. So I don't recommend using it on a server.

edit: Sorry again. It seems not to be a problem of the mod. Without it crashes too. (I'm confused.)

Hm, well, I haven't seen any crashes.

Are you going to add this to the public server list?

Sure, if I find out how to do that. I wasn't even aware of a public server list (or rather, I'm still not aware of it).

That doesn't exist:

I've already got that set. I saw it in the config file and decided to set it to 1 to see what it did, but not seeing anything on my laptop (see above), I figured it must not be doing anything. Apparently I was right.

Ohhh, you need to compile both Client and server with cURL installed.
Thats the problem.

...Shouldn't that kind of thing be mentioned in the readme? There's no mention of any optional dependencies anywhere. Just an example apt-get command with what must be the bare minimum to compile Minetest.

I guess I'll have to recompile, then...

You have to go to the advanced tab. The multiplayer tab is for connecting to servers.
Coding;
1X coding
3X debugging
12X tweaking to be just right

Well, I recompiled on both my laptop and the desktop computer running the server with cURL (package curl) installed, but I'm not seeing any results. The Multiplayer tab looks exactly the same as before on my laptop.

I know how to host a server... it's already up. That's why I posted a topic saying I'm hosting a server. My only issue here is that it's not on the server list, and I can't see the server list.

On the advanced tab where you have creative or damage chosen you need to choose the option under them.

Well, first off, there isn't such an option, and that's sort of my problem: what I have apparently doesn't support that, either because the source listed in the downloads page as "0.4.5" is an old build or (much more likely) because of the way I compiled it. But second off, that's not how I'm running my server. I'm running it from the command line with minetestserver, and the relevant option is set to 1 in the config file.

As I suspected, it was libcurl I needed, not cURL. In my case, I installed libcurl4-gnutls-dev, though I'm sure "libcurl3-dev" (which links to libcurl4-openssl-dev) would have worked just as well. The server ought to be "public" in a couple minutes.

Seriously, Minetest's documentation needs some serious work. The only clue that libcurl is something Minetest uses is the cmake output.

You also need to set some settings:

Code: Select all

# Name of server
server_name = Minetest server
# Description of server
server_description = mine here
# Domain name of server
server_address = game.minetest.net
# Homepage of server
server_url = http://minetest.net
# Automaticaly report to masterserver
server_announce = 1

No. This isn't supposed to be a creative server.

Alright, I've changed the title again so it's more clear. What I intended with this server was for it to be a ruleless survival game. This means you have to make your own rules and enforce them, as in the real world.

Did you try to connect from the public server list, or from the IP address I listed in the OP? My IP address has changed since then (I'll correct this), so if you typed the IP address manually, you wouldn't be able to connect, but the address is correct if you choose from the server list.

If you did choose from the server list, something must be wrong. I also notice that a lot of people's connections have been timing out...

Alright, I've started this server up again. Keeping it at 0.4.5 for now, I'll update it to 0.4.6 or 0.4.7 at a later date (I'm waiting to see what happens with the Simple Mobs and MOB Framework mods).

Add mudslide mod. I think it is good for survival server. It should work with 0.4.5 too. (I don't see anything that doesn't work)Mudslide Mod
I have stopped playing minetest, and may not come back to it again. I would like to thank everyone that made the amazing time I had playing it. This account is not in use anymore, and the email has been linked to a unused account. If any administrator reading this has time, feel free to delete my account. Thank you very much for the great experience.

I haven't tried that mod, but it sounds like it's not much more than a random auto-griefer. It doesn't sound fun to me.
